Abu Dhabi Investment Authority | A Brief Introduction

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority is one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds. It was established to invest capital in international financial markets on behalf of the Abu Dhabi Government. 

The history of ADIA dates back to 1967 when the Abu Dhabi Emirates created the Financial Investment Board, which was responsible for managing the excess oil reserves of the Emirates. However, in 1976, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan converted the board into the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority to invest the government’s excess funds across asset classes while maintaining a certain level of risk. 

The Emirate of Abu Dhabi owns the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA), which manages assets worth $1.057 trillion. This authority undertakes investing activity focusing on long-term value creation while allocating a large portion of its capital to the USA and Indian markets.

ADIA plans and executes its investment activities using a wide planning process. It ensures that ADIA investments align with the short, medium and long-term goals.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority's portfolio in India includes 25 Indian stocks from various sectors of the stock market. As of April 2025, the total value of ADIA’s portfolio stands at ₹4,057.65 crores. 

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) has strategically invested its capital into sectors led by consumer durables with a 15.2% stake. After consumer durables comes the power sector at 12.8% stake, followed by Gas Transmission (11.3%), FMCG (10.2%), Hospitality (8.4%), Media & Entertainment (6.4%), and others. 

ADIA investments in India include stocks such as Gujarat State Petronet Ltd., Crompton Greaves, Saregama India, Sapphire Foods, Data Patterns and other publicly traded equities. 

Recent Updates in Abu Dhabi Investment Authority Portfolio

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (ADIA) of India's portfolio underwent extensive changes in April 2025. During the month, the firm added SIS Ltd. and Indian Energy Exchange to its portfolio by acquiring 23,99,148 and 90,62,550 shares in each company, respectively. 

On the contrary, ADIA decreased its stake in Raymond Lifestyle, Raymond Limited, DOMS industries, Keystone Realtors, Galaxy Surfacants and other key companies from its holdings. Similarly, Abu Dhabi Investment Authority increased its stake in Sapphire Foods India, Gujarat State Petronet, Rainbow Children’s Medicare and other companies.
