What is the Nifty Midcap 100 Index?

Nifty Midcap 100 Index is a broad-based stock market index of the National Stock Exchange of India. The index tracks the performance and behaviour of the top 100 mid-cap stocks listed on the NSE. 

The index comprises the top 100 NSE stocks, excluding the ones included in the Nifty 50 index. The Nifty Midcap 100 index share price assists investors and other participants in gauging the overall sentiment of the stock market’s midcap segment. 

The Nifty 100 Midcap was launched on 18th July 2005 with a base date of 1st January 2003 and a base index value of 1000. Consisting of 100 stocks, the index acts as a real-time benchmark for measuring the performance and overall momentum of the midcap segment over a period. 

The Nifty Midcap 100 index includes 18 stock market sectors such as Financial Services, Capital Goods, Healthcare, Information Technology, Automobile and Auto Components, Chemicals, and other major sectors of the economy. 

 

Nifty Midcap 100 Share Price Formula & Calculation 

The Nifty Midcap 100 Index is calculated using the free-float market capitalisation method. Here, the index value represents the aggregate free float market cap of all 100 index constituents. To know more about the calculation of the Nifty Midcap 100 index share price, refer to the formula below:

Nifty Midcap 100 Index Formula -  Free float market capitalisation of the index / (Base Market cap of the index* base index value).

Here, 

Base index value = 1000

Free float market cap = shares outstanding * IWF * capping factor * price 

Free float = Shares freely available for trading in secondary markets

IWF = Investible weight factor

The Nifty Midcap 100 is also subject to a semi-annual review, for which the cutoff dates are 31st January and 31st July each year. At the time of review, necessary changes are made in the index (if necessary) using the average data for the six months ending the cut-off date. 

 

Nifty Midcap 100 Index Stocks - Selection Criteria

  1. Stocks must be listed on the NSE and should form part of the mid-cap category. 
  2. The index includes Nifty Midcap 50 constituents. Constituents added in Nifty Midcap 50, not included in Nifty Midcap 100, shall be included in the index.
  3. For the rest of the companies, stocks are selected if their rank based on average daily turnover is among the top 70 constituents in Nifty Midcap 150. 
  4. Securities from Nifty Midcap 100 will be excluded if: 
    1. A company is excluded from the Nifty Midcap 150 index. 
    2. If the ranks of security are below 130 based on the 

              average daily turnover from the Nifty Midcap 150 constituents.
