The National Stock Exchange of India Ltd (NSE) is a leading stock exchange based in Mumbai, incorporated in 1992 and started operations in 1994. It introduced electronic, screen-based trading to India — replacing the open-outcry system of the BSE. NSE operates across three asset classes: Equity, Currency Derivatives, and Commodity Derivatives. The equity segment is the most widely tracked, with over Rs.70,000 crore in daily turnover as of 2026.
NSE is managed and owned by NSE Ltd, with major institutional shareholders including LIC, SBI, and various domestic and foreign financial institutions. NSE Equity Segments Explained

Not all NSE-listed stocks trade under the same rules. NSE operates three equity segments:
EQ Segment (Normal / Rolling Settlement)
The EQ segment includes all normally traded equity shares. Settlement follows the T+1 cycle (trade today, receive shares tomorrow). The vast majority of NSE’s 2,200+ listed stocks trade in the EQ segment, including all Nifty 50, Nifty 100, and F&O stocks. This is where retail and institutional investors primarily transact.
BE Segment (Trade-for-Trade)
The BE (Book Entry) or T2T segment includes stocks placed here by NSE/SEBI due to surveillance concerns — typically low-liquidity, high-volatility penny stocks and newly listed companies. Stocks in the BE segment must be delivered and cannot be squared off intraday. They cannot be traded in F&O. NSE moves stocks in and out of BE based on surveillance metrics.
SM Segment (SME Platform)
The SME (Small and Medium Enterprises) platform is a dedicated trading platform for smaller companies with relaxed listing norms compared to the main board. NSE’s SME platform (NSE Emerge) had 400+ listed companies as of 2026. SME stocks have different trading lots (minimum 1 lot = multiples of shares, not 1 share) and lower market-maker obligations.

NSE F&O Stocks List — Most Traded

FAQs — NSE Stock List
How many stocks are listed on NSE?
As of April 2026, the NSE has over 2,200 stocks listed on its main equity board (EQ, BE, and SM segments combined). Of these, approximately 250+ are eligible for Futures & Options (F&O) trading. The complete list is updated daily and available for download on nseindia.com.
What is the difference between NSE and BSE stocks?
The NSE (National Stock Exchange) and BSE (Bombay Stock Exchange) are India’s two largest stock exchanges. Most large-cap companies are dual-listed on both exchanges and can be traded on either. NSE is larger by trading volume and turnover. BSE has more listed companies (5,000+) but lower average turnover. For most retail investors, NSE is the primary market for equities and derivatives.
What does T+1 settlement mean on NSE?
T+1 settlement means that trades executed today (T = trade day) are settled on the next business day (T+1). In practical terms, if you buy shares on Monday, they appear in your demat account on Tuesday. NSE implemented T+1 settlement fully in January 2023, making India one of the first major markets globally to adopt this faster settlement cycle.
Can I trade NSE stocks on weekends?
No. NSE trading hours are Monday to Friday, 9:15 AM to 3:30 PM IST only. The exchange is closed on national holidays (as declared by NSE in the annual holiday calendar) and on Saturday and Sunday. Pre-market session (9:00–9:15 AM) and after-market orders (3:40–4:00 PM) are available with select brokers for the regular NSE session.
