Brief History of Goldman Sachs

1869 -  Goldman Sachs was started as Marcus Goldman in New York. He started the company with a commercial paper business from an office situated at 30 Pine Street in Lower Manhattan.

1885 - The company was officially named as Goldman Sachs & Co., a partnership firm between Marcus, his son, and his son-in-law.

1900s - During the 1900s, Goldman Sachs started expanding its business extensively and establishing itself as a full-service investment bank.  It conducted two public transactions in 1906: an initial stock offering for General Cigar and Sears Roebuck. 

1956 and 1958 - In 1956, Goldman acted as a managing underwriter for the largest common stock and bond issue of the time. A $657 million public offering for Ford Motor Company (1956) and a $350 million debenture offering for Sears Roebuck (1958). 

1991 - Goldman Sachs became the first international securities company to open a banking subsidiary in Japan. Simultaneously, during this time, the company kept expanding its operations in the European markets.

1998 - Goldman Sachs went public in 1998. On 4th May 1999, the firm's shares started trading on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GS. Further, in 1999, Hank Paulson was appointed chairman and chief executive officer.

As per the first quarterly earnings report of 2025, Goldman Sachs earned a net revenue of $15.06 billion in Q1FY25. The net earnings within the same period were registered as $7.47 billion with an EPS of $14.12 and an annualised ROE of 16.9%. 

Segment-wise breakdown of Goldman Sachs revenue (Q1FY25): 

Global Banking & Markets - Goldman Sachs earned a net revenue of $10,707 million in this segment for the period mentioned above. For the period ending Q4FY24 and Q1FY24, Goldman earned net revenue of $8,479 million and $9,726 million, respectively. 

 Asset & Wealth Management - Under the asset & wealth management division, the company clocked a net revenue of $3,679 million, which was lower than the revenue of the same period in the previous financial year. For the period ending Q4FY24, Goldman’s net revenue for the segment was $4,721 million, and for Q1FY24, the revenue was $3,789 million. 


Platform Solutions - In Q1FY25, Goldman earned a net revenue of $676 million from the platform solution division. Further, in Q4FY24, the company’s net revenue was $669 million; in Q1FY24, revenue stood at $698 million.
