The Nifty Service Sector Index refers to the index of companies which represent the service sector, such as Computers-Software, IT Education and Training, Banks, Telecommunication Services, Financial Institutions, Power, Media, Courier, Shipping, etc. It aims to evaluate the performance of the service sector, which helps investors analyse the companies in the industry. The Nifty Service Sector contributes to the economic and financial conditions on the global level. The criteria for the selection of companies in the Nifty Service Sector Index are based on their market capitalisation, the volume traded, and other financial analysis. The service sector plays a crucial role in the Indian Economy and is also growing rapidly with the innovations that are being spread globally.

The total number of constituents in the Nifty Service Sector shall not exceed 30 companies that are listed on the National Stock Exchange. The Nifty Service Sector has a Base Date of June 01, 1999, with a base value of 1000. The Nifty Service Sector includes the service-based companies such as Financial Services, Information Technology, Telecommunications, Power, Consumer Services, and many more. Eligibility Criteria for Nifty Service Sector

  • At the time of reviewing the Nifty service sector, Companies must be a part of the Nifty 500.
  • If the stocks eligible for the Nifty Service Sector fall below 10 of the particular sector included in the Nifty 500, then the number of deflated stocks must be selected from the top 800 stocks ranked on the NSE. 
  • Companies must form a part of the service sector.
  • The ranking of the top 800 companies, which are selected for the deflated stocks, must be based on the whole market capitalisation method for the previous six months.
  •  The frequency of trading for the company should not be less than 90% in the last six months.
  • The company should have a history of listing on the NSE for at least one month as of the cut-off date.
  •  The method for selecting 30 companies should be based on free-float market capitalisation.
  • The weightage of each stock shall not exceed 33%, and the combined weightage of the top 3 stocks must not exceed 62%.
  •  The criteria for rebalancing shall be based on a semiannual basis.
  • January 31 and July 31 must be the cut-off dates each year.

Calculation and Formulation of Nifty Service Sector

The method of calculating the Nifty Service Sector Index is based on the free-float market capitalisation-weighted method, which is a basic approach used by the NSE for its sector division. The companies shall be taken by the Nifty 500 that are only selected from the service sector. Free-Float market capitalisation is calculated by multiplying the shares outstanding by the Price of shares and the free float factor. Then, calculate the base market cap, and the value of the base Index will be taken as 1000. The Free-float market capitalisation refers to the freely traded shares on the platform of the National Stock Exchange. There will be an exclusion of shares held by the government, promoters, investors, and analysts. The Calculation of the Nifty Service Sector will help investors to analyse the Top Service Sector Stocks. 

Formula of Nifty Service Sector = Current Free-Float Market Cap/ Base Market Cap * Base Index Value.
