What is Nifty MNC Index?
Nifty MNC index is a thematic index of the National Stock Exchange (NSE). It comprises 30 listed multinational companies (MNCs) in which foreign promoters have more than 50% shareholdings. Formerly, the Nifty MNC stocks list consisted of only 15 equity securities; however, after 28th September 2018, the number of stocks in the index was raised to 30, and the weightage of each stock is capped at 10%.
The Nifty MNC Index was launched with a base date of 2nd January 1995, along with a base index value of 1000. NSE Indices Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of NSE, launched the index and is responsible for owning and managing all market indices under the Nifty brand.
The Nifty MNC covers 11 stock market sectors, which include FMCG (35.13%), Capital Goods (23.80%), Automobile and Auto Components (16.66%), Metal & Mining (7.7%), Healthcare (5.67%), Construction Materials (3.88%), and 5 other sectors.
Nifty MNC Share Price Formula and Calculation
The Nifty MNC share price is calculated using the free float market capitalisation method. The resultant value of the index represents the aggregate free float market capitalisation of all its constituents. To know more about the Nifty MNC Index calculation, refer to the formula below:

Here,
Base index value = 1000
Free float market cap = shares outstanding * IWF * capping factor * price
Free float = Shares freely available for trading in secondary markets
IWF = Investible weight factor
The Nifty MNC index is rebalanced semiannually, for which the cut-off dates are 31st January and 31st July of each year. It is important to note that on rebalancing, the weight of the Nifty MNC stocks is capped at 10%; however, between the rebalancing periods, the weight can go beyond 10%.
Nifty MNC Stocks - Eligibility Criteria
- Companies should form part of the Nifty 500 at the time of review. In case the number of eligible stocks representing a particular sector within Nifty 500 falls below 10, then the remaining stocks shall be selected from the top 800 stocks based on both average daily turnover and average daily full market capitalisation based on the previous six-month period data used for index rebalancing of Nifty 500. ‘
- The foreign promoter holding in the company must be more than 50%.
- The company’s trading frequency must be at least 90% in the last sex months.
- As on the cut-off dates, the company must have a listing history of at least 1 month.
- The final selection of the Nifty MNC companies must be based on the free-float market capitalisation.
