Formulation and Calculation of the BSE Healthcare Index

By using the method of free-float market capitalisation, the BSE Healthcare Index value shall be determined. The free-float market value of all the companies is reflected by the level of the index at any one time and then compared to the base period. The steps in calculating the market capitalisation are as follows: firstly, dividing the share price by the total number of shares of the company, and then multiplying it by the free-float market capitalisation and the free-float factor.

The review criteria for the BSE Healthcare Index are conducted on a semi-annual basis. The Index evaluates the economic conditions of the country among various sectors, and also contributes to the development of the country and provides support to the developing sectors.

The market capitalisation shall be determined by multiplying the number of outstanding shares by the share price and then multiplying the market capitalisation by the proportion of available free float to the number of outstanding shares.

The formula for the BSE Healthcare Index is: Total Free-Float Market Capitalisation * Base Index Value / Base Market Capitalisation.

Advantages of the BSE Healthcare Index

  • The BSE Healthcare Index helps investors track the leading pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, which allows them to focus on the rapid growth of the healthcare and pharma sector.
  • The BSE Healthcare Index offers investors diversification scope and reduces the risk of relying on a single stock for exposure across various sectors.
  • The nature of healthcare is considered to be defensive because it performs well in economic downturns and in uncertain market conditions.
  • The government policies, like “Ayushman Bharat”, increase the strength of the index in long-term performance.

Disadvantages of the BSE Healthcare Index

  • The index represents the healthcare sector and reduces sector diversification, which hurts the healthcare space.
  • Pharma companies sometimes have to follow strict rules and regulations, which can lead to delays, bans, or pricing controls that impact the profitability of the entire industry.
  • Continuous research, trials of clinical and regulatory compliance needs require high investments, and high costs are required in the R&D projects.

How to Invest in the BSE Healthcare Index

Investors can check availability on AMC websites, NSE/BSE sites, or apps, which provide a reliable broking facility, enabling them to select the most profitable and highly growing stocks for their long-term investments. A demat account is necessary if investors want to buy ETFs or constituent stocks, but it is not required if they want to invest through mutual funds and SIPs. If the availability of a direct BSE Healthcare Index fund is not available, investors can consider mutual funds or ETFs. They also provide direct exposure to investors in the BSE Healthcare Index.
