Defence Stocks Today Soar Up to 9% as DAC Clears Rs 2.12 Lakh Crore Proposals: Apollo Micro, Paras Defence, BEL, HAL and Data Patterns in Focus

Quick Answer

Defence stocks rose because the DAC gave Acceptance of Necessity for about Rs 2.12 lakh crore of Army, Navy and Air Force proposals, including air defence, drones, helicopters, a tracked gun system and naval decoys. About 82% of the spend, roughly Rs 1.74 lakh crore (my calculation), is meant for Indian industry, which supports domestic makers. Acceptance of Necessity is only the first stage, so contracts, not the approval itself, will decide revenue. This is educational and not a recommendation.

Defence stocks had been weak before the news, with the daily RSI of eight of the ten stocks I checked between 28 and 43 and five of them still in a SuperTrend sell signal, so Tuesday looks like a sharp bounce inside a softer trend. For investors, the question is which defence stocks have a real link to the approved programmes and which have simply moved with the sector. This article lists what was approved, the movers, the valuations and the levels.

I could not retrieve the names of the brokerages behind the medium-term pipeline view in the headline, so I do not quote any. The DAC date of 26 Oct is inferred from a report published that day. It is educational and not advice.

What the DAC Approved for Defence Stocks to Watch

Defence stocks: service Approved proposals (Acceptance of Necessity)
Indian Army High Mobility Vehicles, a Self-Propelled Tracked Gun System, Gun Shot Response System, Light Multi Role Helicopters, VSHORADS air defence, a platform-based counter-drone system, long-range and surveillance drones, an integrated surveillance and strike system and a long-range kamikaze drone system
Indian Navy Active Offboard Decoy System against anti-ship missiles, and other indigenously designed naval platforms that were not individually named
Indian Air Force Helicopters including Special Utility Helicopters, air defence systems, weapons and a Mobile X-Band Doppler Weather Radar System
Total value About Rs 2.12 lakh crore, chaired by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh
Indian industry share About 82%, or roughly Rs 1.74 lakh crore (my calculation)

Acceptance of Necessity is an in-principle administrative approval. It does not name a supplier or a price, and the headline notes that execution depends on approvals converting into contracts. For defence stocks, that means a gap of months or years between the DAC approval and any order that appears in a company's order book.

For comparison, a DAC meeting on 27 Mar 2026 cleared proposals worth about Rs 2.38 lakh crore, including a medium transport aircraft, the S-400 missile system and Dhanush guns (Prasar Bharati, newsonair). I did not retrieve the share price reaction to that meeting, so I do not compare the two rallies.

Defence Stocks Today: Who Moved and by How Much

Defence stocks: stock Price at 12:10 PM Previous close Day change 52-week high Below high (my calculation)
Data Patterns Rs 4,085.10 Rs 3,773.80 +8.25% Rs 5,000 18.3%

Paras Defence Rs 1,321.10 Rs 1,254 +5.35% Rs 1,585 16.7%
Apollo Micro Systems Rs 432.10 Rs 410.90 +5.16% Rs 466.50 7.4%
Mazagon Dock Rs 1,925.50 Rs 1,875 +2.69% Rs 2,881.80 33.2%
BEL Rs 370.55 Rs 363 +2.08% Rs 473.45 21.7%
Cochin Shipyard Rs 1,150.80 Rs 1,133.90 +1.49% Not retrieved Not retrieved
Solar Industries Rs 18,952 Rs 18,683 +1.44% Not retrieved Not retrieved
HAL Rs 4,814 Rs 4,775 +0.82% Rs 5,149.90 6.5%
Bharat Dynamics Rs 1,034.80 Rs 1,029 +0.56% Rs 1,633.40 36.7%

The headline says defence stocks rose up to 9%. The closest I found were the intraday highs of Apollo Micro Systems at Rs 447, about 8.8% above its previous close, and Data Patterns at Rs 4,092.50, about 8.45% above. By 12:10 PM the gains had narrowed to 8.25% and 5.16%, which shows that the first move was partly given back.

The spread of returns tells its own story. Electronics and systems names such as Data Patterns, Paras Defence and Apollo Micro Systems gained most, shipbuilders were mixed, and the two largest platform makers, HAL and Bharat Dynamics, barely moved. Defence stocks do not move as one block even when the order pipeline news is sector-wide.

Which Defence Stocks May Be Linked to the Approved Programmes

Defence stocks: approved area Listed companies that operate in related areas Caution
Air defence, counter-drone, radar and surveillance BEL, Data Patterns, Apollo Micro Systems, Paras Defence Electronics suppliers can benefit as subsystem makers, but no winner has been named
Helicopters HAL is the main Indian helicopter maker Contract awards and the choice of manufacturer are not yet announced
Naval decoys and platforms Mazagon Dock, GRSE, Cochin Shipyard, BEL The platforms were not individually named
Gun systems and vehicles BEML, Solar Industries, Bharat Dynamics Order sizes are unknown; the link is by business line only

This table maps business areas, not confirmed orders. The DAC did not name a company, and an Acceptance of Necessity can lead to competitive bids in which several firms, including private ones, take part. Among defence stocks, the safe reading is that the approval widens the pool of future tenders, and the share of each company depends on what it wins.

Valuation Check: Are Defence Stocks Already Expensive?

Defence stocks: stock Price to earnings Return on equity Price to book Market cap
Mazagon Dock 26.56 26.48% 7.77 Rs 75,795 crore
HAL 34.27 22.21% 7.78 Rs 3,19,474 crore
BEL 43.22 25.27% 11.08 Rs 2,65,710 crore
Bharat Dynamics 72.41 9.91% 8.89 Rs 37,719 crore
Data Patterns 78.80 15.63% 12.16 Rs 21,115 crore
Paras Defence 105.38 12.14% 14.78 Rs 10,106 crore
Apollo Micro Systems 116.50 8.60% 10.06 Rs 15,282 crore

The data provider shows an industry price to earnings level of 45.08 for BEL, HAL, Mazagon Dock, Paras Defence and Apollo Micro Systems, and 48.70 for Data Patterns and Bharat Dynamics. Mazagon Dock and HAL trade below those levels, BEL is close, and the smaller electronics names trade at two to three times the industry level. Defence stocks with the highest multiples need the most order flow to justify the price.

Technical Levels: Bounce or Trend Change in Defence Stocks

Defence stocks: stock Daily RSI (14) 20-day EMA SuperTrend (10, 3) Key band
Paras Defence 49.73 Rs 1,270.39 Buy Price near the upper band of Rs 1,316.64
HAL 49.89 Rs 4,801.47 Buy Lower band Rs 4,632.04
BEML 42.76 Rs 1,938.36 Buy Lower band Rs 1,787.55
BEL 36.99 Rs 374.80 Buy Lower band Rs 356.42, upper band Rs 383.98
Data Patterns 39.52 Rs 4,061.04 Sell Upper band Rs 4,157.02
Bharat Dynamics 37.09 Rs 1,078.51 Sell Upper band Rs 1,116.19
GRSE 39.03 Rs 2,060.59 Sell Upper band Rs 2,115.83
Mazagon Dock 34.69 Rs 2,020.02 Sell Upper band Rs 2,073.74
Solar Industries 34.66 Rs 19,371.24 Sell Upper band Rs 20,083
Cochin Shipyard 27.77 Rs 1,224.28 Sell Upper band Rs 1,245.46

Half of these defence stocks are still in a SuperTrend sell signal even after today's gains, and Cochin Shipyard, at an RSI of 27.77, is the most oversold. A close above the upper band would be the first sign that the trend has changed for each stock. Paras Defence has already traded above its band, while BEL needs to clear Rs 374.80 and then Rs 383.98. These are trend readings and not targets.

Apollo Micro Systems, which I covered separately after its Q2 results, has a daily RSI of 57.26 and a SuperTrend buy signal with a lower band of Rs 354.37, so it is one of the stronger charts in the group.

Risks and What to Watch Next for Defence Stocks

  1. Conversion to contracts. Acceptance of Necessity is not an order, so watch for requests for proposals and contract announcements.
  2. Competition. Several Indian firms, public and private, can bid for the same programme.
  3. Valuation. Names at 70 to 116 times earnings have little room for delays.
  4. Profit-taking. A sector bounce from oversold levels can fade quickly, as the narrowing of the day's highs shows.
  5. Quarterly results. Order inflow and margins in the September quarter will show who is converting orders into revenue.

Conclusion: Defence Stocks Have a Strong Pipeline, but Orders Decide

Defence stocks rallied because a Rs 2.12 lakh crore DAC approval, with 82% for Indian industry, strengthens the long-term demand picture. The approval is only the first step, valuations are already high for several names, and many charts are still repairing damage. Defence stocks may stay volatile until contracts start to appear. Verify the filings and decide according to your own risk profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are defence stocks rising today?

Ans. The Defence Acquisition Council cleared procurement proposals worth about Rs 2.12 lakh crore, with about 82% earmarked for Indian industry. The approvals include air defence, drones, helicopters, a tracked gun system and naval decoys. By 12:10 PM on 27 Oct 2026, Data Patterns was up 8.25%, Paras Defence up 5.35% and BEL up 2.08%. Check live prices before acting.

What is Acceptance of Necessity?

Ans. It is an in-principle administrative approval that a proposal is needed. It does not name a supplier or fix a price, and contracts follow later. That is why the headline says execution depends on approvals converting into contracts. Defence stocks can move on the news long before orders arrive.

Which defence stocks gained the most?

Ans. At 12:10 PM, Data Patterns was up 8.25%, GRSE up 6.27%, BEML up 5.83%, Paras Defence up 5.35% and Apollo Micro Systems up 5.16%. HAL rose 0.82% and Bharat Dynamics 0.56%. Intraday highs were higher, and prices change during the day.

Are defence stocks expensive now?

Ans. It varies. Mazagon Dock trades at 26.56 times earnings and HAL at 34.27, below the industry level of 45.08, while BEL is at 43.22. Data Patterns, Paras Defence and Apollo Micro Systems trade at 78.8, 105.4 and 116.5 times. Higher multiples need steady order inflow.

Is the rally in defence stocks a trend change?

Ans. Not yet on the charts. Five of the ten stocks I checked are still in a SuperTrend sell signal, and eight had daily RSI readings between 28 and 43 before today's bounce was included. A close above each stock's upper SuperTrend band would be a first sign of change. These are not targets.

How much of the approval is for Indian industry?

Ans. About 82% of the procurement is meant for Indian industry, which is roughly Rs 1.74 lakh crore of the Rs 2.12 lakh crore total (my calculation). The report does not split this between public and private firms or name any supplier.

Should I buy defence stocks after the DAC approval?

Ans. That depends on your time horizon and risk profile, and this article is not a recommendation. The approval supports the long-term order pipeline, but contracts, valuations and execution decide returns. Review company filings and consider position size before acting.

Is this article investment advice?

Ans. No. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell. Please check the figures against company filings and your own risk profile before you act on anything you read here.
