Wipro Returns Over Rs 17,000 Crore to Shareholders Through Buyback, Dividend, 2.6 Times Its H1 Profit
Wipro returned Rs 17,029 crore to shareholders in H1 FY27: a Rs 15,051 crore buyback (60 crore shares at Rs 250) and a Rs 1,978 crore dividend. H1 profit was Rs 6,556 crore, so the payout is 2.6 times profit (my check: 17,029 / 6,556 = 2.60). Operating cash flow was Rs 8,592 crore, so the payout was about 2 times cash flow. Net other income fell 68% from the previous quarter after the buyback.

Quick Answer
The Wipro buyback of Rs 15,051 crore and a dividend of Rs 1,978 crore together returned Rs 17,029 crore to shareholders in the first half of FY27. That is 2.6 times the H1 net profit of Rs 6,556 crore and about 2 times the operating cash flow of Rs 8,592 crore, so the Wipro buyback payout drew on the cash pile and not only on the year's earnings. The Wipro buyback was at Rs 250 a share, a 23% premium to the market price when the board approved it on 16 April 2026, and the interest income on the smaller cash balance fell 68% from the previous quarter. Shareholders gain from the cash and the lower share count, but profit growth is now harder because less cash earns interest.
Wipro has long used buybacks to return cash, and the 2026 round is the largest in its history by size. The Wipro buyback was completed in June 2026, and the dividend was paid during the half year.
This guide breaks down the Rs 17,029 crore, explains why other income fell, compares it with earlier rounds and lists the risks. It is educational and not a recommendation.

Wipro Buyback and Dividend: The Rs 17,029 Crore Breakdown
| Component | Amount | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Wipro buyback | Rs 15,051 crore | 60 crore shares at Rs 250; board approval 16 Apr 2026; completed June 2026 |
| Dividend | Rs 1,978 crore | Per share amount not given in the report |
| Total payout | Rs 17,029 crore | Sum of the two (my check: 15,051 + 1,978) |
| H1 FY27 net profit | Rs 6,556 crore | Q1 about Rs 3,356 crore plus Q2 Rs 3,200 crore |
| Payout to profit | 2.6 times | 17,029 divided by 6,556 (my calculation) |
| H1 operating cash flow | Rs 8,592 crore | Rs 7,499 crore a year earlier |
| Payout to cash flow | About 2.0 times | 17,029 divided by 8,592 (my calculation) |
A search listing shows a Wipro dividend of Rs 2 per share with a record date of 27 July, and Rs 1,978 crore divided by Rs 2 implies about 989 crore shares (my calculation). I could not verify the per share figure in an official filing, so treat it as a cross check only.
Risk: A Wipro buyback and dividend that is twice the cash flow shrinks the cash cushion that Wipro keeps for acquisitions.

How the Wipro Buyback Compares With Earlier Rounds
| Financial year | Buyback size |
|---|---|
| FY17 | Rs 2,500 crore |
| FY18 | Rs 11,000 crore |
| FY21 | Rs 9,500 crore |
| FY24 | Rs 12,000 crore |
| FY27 | Rs 15,051 crore |
The 2026 Wipro buyback is about 25% larger than the Rs 12,000 crore round of FY24 (my calculation). The company says it is returning excess cash while keeping enough net cash for mergers and large deals.
The price of Rs 250 was set at a 23% premium to the market price in April. An earlier quote I found put the stock near Rs 170 on 14 October, which would make Rs 250 about 47% higher (my calculation), so shareholders who tendered shares got a high price against today's market.
Risk: A Wipro buyback at a premium helps those who tender, but holders who did not tender see no direct gain.

Why Other Income Fell 68% After the Wipro Buyback
| Item | Q2 FY27 |
|---|---|
| Net profit | Rs 3,200 crore |
| Change versus Q2 FY26 | Down 1.4% on my calculation (Rs 3,200.6 crore against Rs 3,246.2 crore); other reports say about 2% |
| Change versus Q1 FY27 | Down about 4.6% on my calculation (Rs 3,200.6 crore against Rs 3,356.3 crore) |
| Net other income | Down 68% from the previous quarter |
| Revenue from operations | Rs 24,752.7 crore, up 9.1% year on year |
The cash used for the Wipro buyback no longer earns interest, so net other income fell by 68% from the previous quarter. This explains why profit slipped even as revenue grew 9.1%. One report says the quarter on quarter fall was 9%, which does not match the Rs 3,356.3 crore figure, so I use my own 4.6%.
Wipro gave Q3 guidance of IT services revenue between $2,571 million and $2,625 million, with Q2 revenue at $2,611.5 million. The midpoint of $2,598 million is slightly below Q2 (my calculation), so growth is guided to be flat to lower.
Risk: Lower interest income means EPS growth now depends on operating margin and revenue growth.
What the Wipro Buyback Means for Shareholders
| Effect | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Fewer shares | Profit is shared over fewer shares, which can lift earnings per share |
| Less cash | Interest income falls, which lowers other income |
| Tax | Dividends are taxed in the holder's hands; check current buyback tax rules |
| Signal | Management sees limited use for the cash in the near term |
A Wipro buyback can support the share price, but it does not fix slow growth in IT services. The company's growth in dollar terms was flat from the previous quarter and up 0.3% year on year.
What to Watch Next
- The Q3 FY27 revenue against the guidance of $2,571 million to $2,625 million
- Operating margin and net other income
- Large deal wins and any acquisition
- Cash balance after the payout
- Any new Wipro buyback or dividend announcement
Conclusion
The Wipro buyback and dividend returned Rs 17,029 crore, 2.6 times H1 profit and about 2 times cash flow. Shareholders received cash, but the lower interest income and flat dollar revenue make the next quarters harder.
