Reliance Jio IPO a Win-Win for Telecom Stocks! RIL, Airtel and Vodafone Idea Shares Rise Up to 3.6%: What Should You Do?

Quick Answer

The Jio IPO filing has lifted telecom stocks on 15 October 2026, with Reliance Industries up as much as 2.56% to Rs 1,204.7 and Bharti Airtel up 3.36% to an intraday high of Rs 1,849.1. Jio Platforms plans a fresh issue of up to 27 crore shares at a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119, raising up to Rs 30,213 crore, with the issue open from 21 to 23 October. Motilal Oswal (MOFSL) says the listing could re-rate Bharti Airtel and unlock value in Reliance, and it keeps a Buy on both. Whether the Jio IPO is a win-win for every telecom stock is unproven, so investors should separate the sentiment gain from what the filing changes in earnings.

The Jio IPO is the largest public offering India has seen, and its filing has renewed attention on the whole telecom sector. Telecom shares rose on Thursday, led by Bharti Airtel, and the headline adds Vodafone Idea to the list of gainers.

This guide explains the offer terms, what the Jio IPO could mean for Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea, what MOFSL expects on valuation and tariffs, the risks and a practical checklist. Figures come from the reports I could verify, and I label my own calculations.

This is not a recommendation to apply for the issue or to buy any telecom stock.

Jio IPO Terms: What the Filing Says

Item Detail
Price band Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share
Fresh issue Up to 27 crore equity shares of face value Rs 10
Issue size at the cap price About Rs 30,213 crore
Anchor bidding 19 October 2026
Subscription 21 October to 23 October 2026
Minimum bid 12 shares and multiples of 12; one lot is Rs 13,428 at the cap (my calculation)
Employee discount Rs 54 per share for eligible employees
Reservations Up to Rs 500 crore for employees and up to Rs 2,500 crore for Reliance shareholders
Reliance holding in Jio Platforms 66.43%
Use of proceeds Partly to repay subsidiary borrowings, per the report headline; I could not verify the split

At the cap price, 27 crore shares come to Rs 30,213 crore, which matches the reported size (my calculation). That is about 8% above the Rs 27,858.75 crore raised by Hyundai Motor India in 2024, the previous record (my calculation). One report puts the raise at up to 3.2 billion dollars.

Because the Jio IPO is entirely fresh, Reliance is not selling its stake, and the Jio IPO adds capital to Jio Platforms. Please confirm the use of proceeds in the red herring prospectus.

Risk: Jio IPO terms can be revised before opening, so check the final prospectus and exchange notices.

How Telecom Stocks Reacted to the Jio IPO

Stock Move on 15 Oct 2026 Note
Reliance Industries Up as much as 2.56% to Rs 1,204.7 Another report showed about Rs 1,183.60 early in the session
Bharti Airtel Up 3.36% to a high of Rs 1,849.1 Telecom services sector up about 2.18%, so Airtel beat it by about 1.2 points
Vodafone Idea Not verified The headline says telecom stocks rose up to 3.6%; I could not confirm which stock it refers to
Sensex Up about 1% A broad rally on the day, so part of the move is the market

Part of the telecom gain came from a market that was up about 1%, so the Jio IPO effect is smaller than the headline moves. Bharti Airtel's rise was stock specific by one report's reading, but that report names no catalyst.

A technical view of Airtel is cautious: it is above its 5-day and 20-day averages but below its 50-day, 100-day and 200-day averages, and the report calls the surge a counter-trend bounce. It is down about 11.5% this year and about 95% up over three years.

Risk: A one day gain on news can fade if the market turns or the Jio IPO draws a weak response.

What MOFSL Says About the Jio IPO and Valuation

Point MOFSL view
Valuation assumed About Rs 11 lakh crore, roughly 114 billion dollars
Multiple implied About 12 times FY28 estimated EV/EBITDA
Versus Bharti's India business About 17% premium to 10.3 times implied for it
Bharti Airtel Possible re-rating; fear of fund switching is overstated; Buy
Reliance Industries Room to value unlock on its 66.4% stake; the stock already reflects an 18% to 36% holdco discount; Buy
Free float of Jio Platforms About 3% expected
Tariffs Models a roughly 15% smartphone tariff hike in December 2026
EBITDA growth About 15% compound annual rate over FY26 to FY29 estimates

The 12 times against 10.3 times works out to about a 16.5% premium (my calculation), which matches MOFSL's 17%. The brokerage sees no case for a big discount on Bharti, since it assigns a similar multiple to both. One other report cites a target valuation of about 108.3 billion dollars, so the valuation range differs by source.

MOFSL notes that Bharti discontinued its Rs 299 daily data pack and that Jio relaunched its JioPrime membership, which it reads as signs that a tariff hike could be near. MOFSL blames a delayed tariff hike for Bharti being down 15% and RIL down 23% this year as of 7 October, against a 13% fall in the Nifty 50. These are the brokerage's views, not facts.

Risk: The re-rating thesis depends on the issue pricing well and on tariffs rising, and neither is certain.

Is the Jio IPO a Win-Win for Telecom Stocks?

Stock Possible upside Possible concern
Reliance Industries A listing prices Jio's value in the market and may narrow the holdco discount RIL's own shares may lose a growth story if Jio is valued at a premium by others
Bharti Airtel A premium for Jio supports a similar multiple for Airtel Some investors may switch money from Airtel to Jio, though MOFSL calls this overstated
Vodafone Idea Sector sentiment and tariff hopes Heavy debt and weak cash flow, so the benefit is indirect; I could not verify the day's price move

The win-win label for the Jio IPO is a headline, not an analysis. The shared gain is mainly sentiment about a possible tariff hike and a fair value marker for the sector. The risks differ by company, and Vodafone Idea sits in a different position because of its balance sheet.

Risk: Treating all telecom stocks as winners ignores the differences in debt, market share and cash flow.

Grey Market Premium and the Jio IPO

Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indicator for the Jio Platforms IPO that is not endorsed by SEBI, NSE, or BSE. Investors looking for indicative GMP data can go through other relevant sources, though such figures should never be the sole basis for an investment decision.

What Should Investors Do Now?

If you are A sensible approach
A Reliance or Airtel shareholder Review your position against your horizon; avoid adding only because of a one day move
Considering the Jio IPO Read the Jio IPO prospectus, check the valuation and decide your lot size before 21 October
A trader Expect volatility around the anchor day on 19 October and the close on 23 October
Interested in Vodafone Idea Check debt, subscriber trends and tariff plans first

A tariff hike is the clearest driver of telecom earnings. The Jio IPO adds a valuation marker, but it does not change average revenue per user by itself. Investors may wish to follow tariff news as closely as the issue.

Risk: Applying for a very large offer without reading the prospectus is a common mistake, so check the financials and risk factors first.

What to Watch Next After the Jio IPO Filing

  1. Anchor investor allocation on 19 October
  2. Jio IPO subscription levels from 21 to 23 October, by category
  3. The final Jio IPO price within the band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119
  4. Any tariff hike by Jio, Airtel or Vodafone Idea after the Jio IPO
  5. Reliance and Bharti Airtel prices against their 50-day averages

Conclusion

The Jio IPO has lifted telecom stocks, but part of the move is the market and part is sentiment on tariffs. MOFSL sees upside for Airtel and RIL, and the real test is the pricing of the Jio IPO and the next tariff hike. Do your own research before acting.
