Reliance Group Market Cap Crosses Rs 30 Lakh Crore After the Jio Listing, Topping Tata as India's Most Valuable Conglomerate: What the Double-Counting Caveat Means

The Reliance Group market cap went past Rs 30 lakh crore on Wednesday, 28 Oct 2026, after Jio Platforms listed and closed near Rs 1,417.50, a market capitalisation of about Rs 13.05 lakh crore (my calculation), which puts the group ahead of the Tata Group at about Rs 25.51 lakh crore (Business Today). The ranking depends on method: Reliance Industries owns most of Jio, and adding both in full counts that stake twice.

Reliance Group Market Cap Crosses Rs 30 Lakh Crore After the Jio Listing, Topping Tata as India's Most Valuable Conglomerate: What the Double-Counting Caveat Means

Quick Answer

The Reliance Group market cap rose above Rs 30 lakh crore on 28 Oct 2026 after Jio Platforms listed at about Rs 13.05 lakh crore, which puts it ahead of the Tata Group at about Rs 25.51 lakh crore, according to Business Today and Bloomberg data. The ranking depends on method, because adding Jio Platforms in full to Reliance Industries, which owns about 64% of it, counts that stake twice, and on my overlap-adjusted estimate the group is closer to Rs 22.0 lakh crore. Adani Group is third at about Rs 16.68 lakh crore. This is educational and not a recommendation.

The Reliance Group market cap has jumped by more than Rs 12 lakh crore in two weeks, and the headline that Reliance has become the most valuable conglomerate in India is correct on the usual method. This article explains how the Reliance Group market cap adds up, how it compares with the Tata Group market cap and the other large groups, why double counting changes the answer, and what could move the gap next, using prices as of 3:44 PM IST.

The sources differ on small points. Business Today says Tata was second on Tuesday, although 28 Oct is a Wednesday, and it gives Reliance only as above Rs 30 lakh crore. I rebuilt the total from the data provider and earlier Business Today figures, and I used the DRHP holding of 66.43% as reported by a secondary site. It is educational and not advice.

Reliance Group Market Cap Versus Tata: What Happened on 28 Oct

Reliance Group market cap: group Combined market cap Source and date
Reliance Group Above Rs 30 lakh crore Business Today and Bloomberg data, 28 Oct
Tata Group About Rs 25.51 lakh crore Business Today, 28 Oct, described as Tuesday's figure
Gap At least about Rs 4.49 lakh crore My calculation; Reliance figure is a floor
Adani Group About Rs 16.68 lakh crore AceEquity data a day earlier, as reported
Jio Platforms market cap About Rs 13.05 lakh crore at Rs 1,417.50 My calculation; Rs 12.51 lakh crore at the Rs 1,358 listing price

The Reliance Group market cap crossed the line because Jio Platforms listed at a value of about Rs 12.5 lakh crore and then rose a further 4.4% by the close. On 16 Oct, Business Today had the Reliance Group at Rs 18.05 lakh crore against Rs 25.92 lakh crore for the Tata Group, so the listing alone closed a gap of about Rs 7.9 lakh crore (my calculation).

How the Reliance Group Market Cap Adds Up

Reliance Group market cap: component Value (Rs lakh crore) Note
Reliance Industries About 15.72 Data provider's Rs 16.24 lakh crore scaled to the Rs 1,158 price (my calculation)
Jio Platforms market cap About 13.05 At Rs 1,417.50, from the issue-price value of Rs 10.30 lakh crore (my calculation)
Jio Financial Services About 1.43 Business Today, 16 Oct, so not updated
Other listed companies About 0.25 Balance of the 16 Oct total; includes Network18, Just Dial and others (my calculation)
Sum About 30.45 Consistent with the reported figure of above Rs 30 lakh crore

This rebuild matches the reported total, which suggests that the usual method simply adds the market value of every listed group company. Reliance Industries fell 3.19% to Rs 1,158 today while Jio rose, so the parent's fall took about Rs 0.5 lakh crore off the Reliance Group market cap (my calculation) even on a day when the group crossed Rs 30 lakh crore.

The Double-Counting Question: Reliance Group Market Cap After Overlap

Reliance Group market cap: step Value Note
Jio Platforms shares outstanding About 920.9 crore Rs 10,30,490.55 crore at Rs 1,119 (my calculation)
Reliance holding before the issue 66.43% DRHP figure, per a secondary site
Reliance holding after the fresh issue About 64.5% My calculation, assuming about 27 crore fresh shares
Value of Reliance's stake in Jio About Rs 8.42 lakh crore 593.8 crore shares at Rs 1,417.50 (my calculation)
Group total after removing the stake About Rs 22.0 lakh crore 30.45 minus 8.42 (my calculation)
Tata Group About Rs 25.51 lakh crore Business Today

Reliance Industries is listed, and its market value already includes the value of its stake in Jio. When Jio lists, adding the full Jio Platforms market cap to Reliance Industries counts that stake twice, which is double counting. Remove it and the Reliance Group market cap is closer to Rs 22.0 lakh crore, which would be below the Tata Group. Neither Business Today nor Bloomberg addresses the overlap in the pieces I could read, so the headline and my estimate are two ways to count and not a contradiction.

Religare Securities said that listing Jio could reduce the holding company discount at Reliance Industries, which would lift the parent's price over time. If that happens, the Reliance Group market cap would rise on both methods.

India's Largest Business Groups by Market Cap

Reliance Group market cap: group 16 Oct (Business Today) 28 Oct
Tata Group (27 listed companies) Rs 25.92 lakh crore About Rs 25.51 lakh crore
Reliance Group Rs 18.05 lakh crore Above Rs 30 lakh crore
Adani Group Rs 17.23 lakh crore About Rs 16.68 lakh crore
HDFC Group Nearly Rs 13.9 lakh crore Not retrieved
Aditya Birla Group More than Rs 10.20 lakh crore Not retrieved

The Tata Group's total slipped from Rs 25.92 lakh crore to about Rs 25.51 lakh crore over the period, and Tata Consultancy Services fell 1.48% to Rs 2,460 today, while Titan, Tata Steel, Trent and Tata Motors are the other large contributors. The Tata Group market cap falls with the market, whereas the Reliance Group market cap rose with one listing.

What Could Move the Reliance Group Market Cap Gap Next

Reliance Group market cap: driver Effect on the ranking
Jio Platforms price Each 10% move in Jio changes the group total by about Rs 1.3 lakh crore (my calculation)
Reliance Industries price RIL is down 25.4% year to date against 13.3% for the Nifty 50, as reported; RSI is 38 and the daily Supertrend is bearish at Rs 1,230.75
Tata Consultancy Services and Titan The two largest Tata contributors move the Tata Group market cap
Index inclusion for Jio Not immediate, because derivatives must be introduced first, and analysts expect it to take several months
Method used by data vendors Overlap treatment can flip the ranking

The ranking will not stay fixed. A 10% fall in Jio would remove about Rs 1.3 lakh crore from the Reliance Group market cap, while a rally in the Tata stocks could narrow the lead in either direction. Which group is first also depends on the day of measurement, as the Tata figure here is from the day before.

Risks and Caveats for the Reliance Group Market Cap Headline

  1. Double counting. The Reliance Group market cap of above Rs 30 lakh crore counts Reliance's Jio stake twice.
  2. Different dates. The Tata figure is from the previous day and the Jio value is from the close, so the gap is approximate.
  3. Volatility after listing. Newly listed stocks can swing sharply, and Jio Platforms shares may see profit booking that cuts the Reliance Group market cap.
  4. Parent weakness. Reliance Industries fell 3.19% today, so the parent can pull the Reliance Group market cap down even as Jio rises.
  5. Source gaps. I could not retrieve a Bloomberg page, so the Rs 30 trillion and Rs 25 trillion figures are as quoted in news reports.

Conclusion: The Reliance Group Market Cap Leads on the Headline Method, but the Ranking Depends on How You Count

The Reliance Group market cap is above Rs 30 lakh crore, which makes it the most valuable conglomerate on the usual method, ahead of the Tata Group at about Rs 25.51 lakh crore, driven by the Jio listing. Remove the double-counted stake and my estimate is about Rs 22.0 lakh crore, so the answer depends on method and on the day. Check the data source, note the method, and decide with your own risk profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Reliance Group market cap after the Jio listing?

Ans. The Reliance Group market cap is above Rs 30 lakh crore on the usual method, according to Business Today and Bloomberg data reports. My rebuild from the data provider gives about Rs 30.45 lakh crore, with Jio Platforms at about Rs 13.05 lakh crore.

Has Reliance overtaken Tata as India's most valuable conglomerate?

Ans. On the usual method of adding every listed group company, yes, with the Reliance Group above Rs 30 lakh crore against about Rs 25.51 lakh crore for the Tata Group. On my overlap-adjusted estimate of about Rs 22.0 lakh crore, Tata would still be ahead.

What is double counting in the Reliance Group market cap?

Ans. Reliance Industries owns about 64% of Jio Platforms after the issue (my calculation), so its market value already includes the stake. Adding Jio's full market capitalisation to the group total counts that stake a second time.

What is the Tata Group market cap now?

Ans. Business Today gives about Rs 25.51 lakh crore for the Tata Group, from the day before the listing, down from Rs 25.92 lakh crore on 16 Oct. Tata Consultancy Services is the largest member, and it fell 1.48% to Rs 2,460 today.

Which group is third by market cap?

Ans. The Adani Group is third at about Rs 16.68 lakh crore, per AceEquity data reported by Business Today. It was Rs 17.23 lakh crore on 16 Oct, when the HDFC Group stood at nearly Rs 13.9 lakh crore.

Why did Reliance Industries fall when Jio rose?

Ans. Reliance Industries fell 3.19% to Rs 1,158 on 28 Oct amid a weak market and crude above USD 115, while Jio Platforms rose 26.68% from its issue price. The two now trade separately, so they can move in different directions.

What can change the ranking next?

Ans. Moves in the Jio Platforms price, in Reliance Industries and in Tata Consultancy Services and Titan can all shift the gap, and the overlap method matters. A 10% move in Jio changes the Reliance Group market cap by about Rs 1.3 lakh crore (my calculation).

Is this article investment advice?
