Nifty 50 Earnings May Surge in Q2, but the Road Ahead Is Rocky: Q2 FY27 Profit Estimates From Motilal Oswal, Kotak, Axis and Jefferies, Net Interest Margin and Key Risks

Quick Answer

Nifty 50 earnings for Q2 FY27 are seen rising between 21% and 27% year on year, with Motilal Oswal at 27%, its best in 17 quarters, and a four-brokerage compilation at 24.7%, or about Rs 2.35 trillion. Banks, NBFCs, metals, telecom, autos and oil and gas are expected to lead, while net interest margin pressure, higher input costs, FII outflows and West Asia tensions make the road ahead rocky. The growth also sits on a low base of Rs 1.88 trillion from Q2 FY26, and seven index companies are expected to report lower profit. Estimates differ by brokerage, so use the range as a guide and compare actual results against it as companies report.

Nifty 50 earnings are the focus of the headline that says earnings may surge in Q2 but the road ahead is rocky. Brokerages expect the September quarter to be the strongest for index profit growth in years, yet they also warn about margins, funding costs and foreign selling.

This guide explains what brokerages expect for Nifty 50 earnings, why their numbers differ, which sectors drive the growth, where the risks sit, and what the FY27 and FY28 estimates say.

The Q2 earnings figures below come from brokerage previews published on 8 and 9 October 2026 and from earlier data that I label with its date.

Nifty 50 Earnings Q2 FY27: What Brokerages Expect

Kotak Institutional Equities Nifty 50 net profit Up 21%
Jefferies Universe excluding oil and gas, metals and financials Earnings up 14%; revenue up 17%

The numbers for Nifty 50 earnings differ because each firm measures a different set of companies. Some use the full Nifty 50, some a wider coverage list, and some drop oil marketing companies or financials. The index also changed on 30 September, when BSE Ltd replaced Wipro, and the compilation excludes BSE.

Nifty 50 Earnings in Numbers: Profit, Revenue and Base

Measure Figure Note
Q2 FY26 profit (base) About Rs 1.88 trillion The low base lifts the growth rate
Q2 FY27 profit estimate About Rs 2.35 trillion Slightly below the record Rs 2.37 trillion in Q1 FY27
Q2 FY27 revenue estimate About Rs 16.87 trillion Up 17.4%; net interest income is used for banks and lenders
Q1 FY27 revenue growth 19.9% So Q2 would be the second best in 15 quarters
Profit as share of revenue About 13.9% against 13.1% a year ago My calculation from the figures above

Profit in Nifty 50 earnings is expected to grow faster than revenue on this broad measure, but it mixes banks with other companies. Jefferies sees the opposite for its non-financial universe, with the aggregate EBITDA margin down 0.6 points from the previous quarter and 1 point from a year ago.

Which Sectors Drive Nifty 50 Earnings in Q2

Sector Expectation Source

NBFCs Earnings up more than 24%; Jefferies sees profit growth above 34% Motilal Oswal; Jefferies

Telecom and oil and gas Named as growth drivers; no figure given Kotak; Motilal Oswal
Autos Tata Motors passenger vehicles to give about 15% of the incremental earnings growth Four-brokerage compilation
Jewellers and retail Jewellers' EBITDA up more than 30%; retailers up more than 20% Jefferies
Weak sectors Commodity chemicals, FMCG, fertilisers and agrochemicals, pharma Kotak

The growth in Nifty 50 earnings is also concentrated. Tata Motors passenger vehicles, Reliance Industries and ONGC together account for about 37% of the incremental profit, and Reliance, Tata Motors passenger vehicles and Hindalco for about 41% of incremental sales.

Why the Road Ahead for Nifty 50 Earnings Is Rocky

  1. Net interest margin pressure: Motilal Oswal expects bank margins to fall 7 to 15 bps from the previous quarter on higher deposit costs and a changing deposit mix.
  2. Lower bank revenue at big lenders: SBI, HDFC Bank, Axis Bank and Kotak Mahindra Bank are expected to report lower net interest income because interest expense is growing faster.
  3. Input costs: Jefferies finds that 62% of companies in its universe face a year on year margin decline, and Kotak points to commodity costs.
  4. Foreign selling and bond yields: Motilal Oswal names persistent FII outflows and global bond yields at a two-decade high as concerns.
  5. Geopolitics and energy: the West Asia conflict keeps crude prices and inflation risks elevated.
  6. Uneven recovery: seven Nifty 50 companies, including ITC, Dr Reddy's, InterGlobe Aviation, Tata Steel and Cipla, are expected to report lower profit.

RBL Bank shows how a strong number can still meet a weak reaction. It reported profit up about 170% in Q2, yet its shares fell about 8% on higher provisions and an expected cooling in margin. The same can happen to Nifty 50 earnings leaders if guidance disappoints.

FY27 and FY28 Nifty 50 Earnings Estimates

Estimate Figure Note
Kotak Nifty 50 EPS, FY27 Rs 1,227 Kotak Institutional Equities
Kotak Nifty 50 EPS, FY28 Rs 1,398 About 13.9% above FY27 (my calculation)
Jefferies MSCI India earnings growth, FY27 14% Jefferies
Consensus FY27 EPS, as of 3 June 2026 Rs 1,235 Down about 9% from Rs 1,357 a year earlier
Consensus EPS growth, as of 3 June 2026 16.2% in FY27; 15.2% in FY28 Bloomberg, via 5paisa; dated and may have changed

The June data shows that estimates for Nifty 50 earnings have been cut over the past year, with 31 of 50 companies downgraded in May alone. That is why the Q2 numbers will be read for guidance on the second half and not only for the growth rate. I did not verify today's Nifty level, so I have not given a price to earnings ratio.

How to Use the Q2 Earnings Season for Nifty 50 Earnings

  1. Compare each result with the Nifty 50 earnings estimate and not only with last year, since the base is low.
  2. Check bank margin and deposit cost commentary before reading the profit line.
  3. Look for festive demand, rural recovery and input cost comments from consumer and auto companies.
  4. Watch whether Nifty 50 earnings estimates for FY27 are raised or trimmed after the results.
  5. Judge a stock by its own numbers, not by Nifty 50 earnings as an index average, as the spread between sectors is wide.

Risks to Nifty 50 Earnings

Low base: Part of the 24.7% growth in Nifty 50 earnings comes from a weak Q2 FY26 (a base effect), so the underlying pace is lower.

Concentration: Three companies give about 37% of the incremental profit, so a miss at one can pull down the total.

Estimate cuts: Estimates were trimmed through the past year, and further cuts can follow if margins disappoint.

Differing estimates: The range from 14% to 27% reflects different universes, so the headline number alone can mislead.

What to Watch Next

  1. Large bank Q2 earnings and their net interest margin guidance.
  2. Margin commentary from consumer, auto and chemical companies.
  3. Revisions to Nifty 50 earnings estimates for FY27 and FY28.
  4. FII flows and global bond yields.
  5. Crude oil prices and the West Asia situation.

Conclusion

Nifty 50 earnings are expected to grow 21% to 27% in Q2 FY27, helped by banks, metals, telecom and autos and by a low base. Margin pressure, concentration and foreign selling are the reasons the road ahead is rocky, so read results against estimates. Consult a SEBI-registered advisor before making any decision.
