Mega Listings in India: Did Jio Platforms Break the Jinx? How the Debut Compares With LIC, Hyundai, NSE and Paytm and What History Says

Jio Platforms listed 21.36% above its issue price on 28 Oct 2026, while Mint reports that LIC closed about 8% below its issue price, Hyundai Motor India closed about 7.2% below and NSE closed about 1.85% above on their debut days. The comparison is not yet like for like, because Jio’s figure is a listing price and the others are closing prices, and Jio’s own close is not known at 11:26 AM. Of the mega listings in India compared here, Jio has the highest figure, though the measures differ.

Mega Listings in India: Did Jio Platforms Break the Jinx? How the Debut Compares With LIC, Hyundai, NSE and Paytm and What History Says

Quick Answer

Mega listings in India have a poor day-one record: LIC closed about 8% below its issue price of Rs 949 in 2022, Hyundai Motor India closed about 7.2% below Rs 1,960 in 2024 and NSE closed only about 1.85% above Rs 1,785 in 2026, as per Mint. Jio Platforms listed at Rs 1,358 against Rs 1,119, a gain of 21.36%, after a subscription of 22.19 times compared with 2.28 times for Hyundai. The verdict depends on the closing price and on how the stock trades over the next few months, which one expert thinks could hold because tradable supply is limited. This is educational and not a recommendation.

Mega listings in India have long carried a jinx, because very large issues tend to attract heavy demand but then struggle to absorb selling on the first day. This article compares the Jio Platforms debut with earlier mega listings in India, shows what is known and what is not, and sets out the reasons experts give for why Jio may be different.

Univest has already published a pre-listing article on this question, so this one looks at the result of the Jio Platforms listing for mega listings in India. I could not retrieve Mint’s own report titled ‘Jio Platforms bucks mega-IPO trend with a strong opening’, which is behind a paywall, and I did not find day-one results for the other large issues in the list. The data is educational and not advice.

Mega Listings in India: The Largest Issues Compared

Mega listings in India: issue Year and size Final subscription Day-one result
Jio Platforms 2026; Rs 30,213 crore, fresh issue 22.19 times Listed at Rs 1,358 against Rs 1,119, up 21.36%; closing price not known yet
Hyundai Motor India (offer for sale) 2024; Rs 27,870 crore 2.28 times (Mint) Closed at Rs 1,819.60 against Rs 1,960, about 7.2% below
NSE (offer for sale) 2026; Rs 22,569 crore 5.7 times Closed at Rs 1,818 against Rs 1,785, about 1.85% above
LIC (offer for sale) 2022; Rs 21,000 crore 2.95 times Closed about 8% below the issue price of Rs 949
Paytm (One97) 2021; Rs 18,300 crore Not stated Negative listing-day return; figure not in the source
Tata Capital 2025; Rs 15,512 crore Not stated Not retrieved
Coal India 2010; Rs 15,200 crore Not stated Not retrieved
HDB Financial Services 2025; Rs 12,500 crore Not stated Not retrieved
LG Electronics India (offer for sale) 2025; Rs 11,607 crore 54.02 times Not retrieved
Reliance Power 2008; Rs 11,563 crore 70.02 times Not retrieved

Hyundai’s close of Rs 1,819.60 against an issue price of Rs 1,960 gives a fall of about 7.2% (my calculation). The Jio Platforms listing came from an issue about 8.4% larger than Hyundai’s (my calculation), which makes it the largest of all mega listings in India so far, and its subscription of 22.19 times is almost ten times Hyundai’s 2.28 times, as Gaurav Arora of SAHI points out.

Why Jio Platforms May Differ From Earlier Mega Listings in India

Mega listings in India: argument Who said it Detail
Demand was far higher Gaurav Arora, SAHI 22 times subscription against 2.28 times for Hyundai
Limited tradable supply and long-term anchors Mohit Gulati, ITI Alternatives Fresh issue is about 2.9% of equity; anchors named as GIC, ADIA, Norges and MAS; gains could hold for three to six months or longer, an assessment and not a promise of returns
Growth sector Arun Kejriwal, Kejriwal Research Tariff hikes and growth, compared with capacity limits at Hyundai; watch zone Rs 1,340 to Rs 1,390
Subscriber base Ratiraj Tibrewal, Choice Capital About 533.3 million subscribers and about 34.3 times post-issue earnings
Caution on mega issues Dr Ravi Singh, Master Capital Services High subscription does not ensure listing gains or lasting returns

The reasons differ in kind: one is demand, one is supply, one is the business and one is a warning. Note that Jio’s issue was entirely fresh, while LIC, Hyundai and NSE were offers for sale, where existing shareholders sold. That difference in who is selling can matter for how the shares trade. Whether these arguments hold for mega listings in India as a group will take years of data.

Jio Platforms Listing Day So Far

Mega listings in India: Jio Platforms level Reading (11:26 AM) Meaning (my calculation)
Issue price Rs 1,119 Base
Listing price Rs 1,358 Up 21.36%
NSE price Rs 1,368.00 Up about 22.3%; day range Rs 1,357 to Rs 1,374.50
Kejriwal zone Rs 1,340 to Rs 1,390 Price is inside it
Kejriwal signal levels Below Rs 1,310 or above Rs 1,410 About 4.2% below and about 3.1% above the price

Because the earlier mega listings in India (LIC, Hyundai and NSE) are quoted at the close of their first day, the fair test for the Jio Platforms listing is its own close, which will be known after 3:30 PM. The article by Mint also says NSE traded at a meaningful discount within a month, per Gaurav Arora, so even a positive first day does not settle the matter. For mega listings in India, the first month will say more than the first hour.

Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indicator that is not endorsed by SEBI, NSE, or BSE. Investors looking for indicative GMP data can go through other relevant sources, though such figures should never be the sole basis for an investment decision.

Risks and What History Cannot Tell You

  1. Small sample. Only a handful of mega listings in India exist, and each had different conditions, so the jinx is a pattern and not a rule.
  2. Different comparisons. Reports on mega listings in India mix listing price, closing price and later prices tell different stories, so check which one a report uses.
  3. Absorbing volume. For mega listings in India, Arora says absorbing listing-day volume and sustaining gains matters more than the opening premium.
  4. Valuation. At about 34.3 times post-issue earnings, delivery on ARPU, cash flow and returns on capital is needed.
  5. Market conditions. The Sensex fell about 1% today on crude and FII selling, and mega listings in India can be hit by wider weakness.

Conclusion: Mega Listings in India Have a Weak Record, and Jio Has Started Differently

Mega listings in India have mostly disappointed on day one, with LIC and Hyundai closing about 8% and 7.2% below issue and NSE gaining about 1.85%, while Jio listed 21.36% above. The debut is a strong start, but the closing price and the next few months are the real test. Use the table to compare mega listings in India like with like, and make decisions with your own risk profile and not the jinx or the headline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the jinx on mega listings in India?

Ans. It is the pattern that very large issues have often listed weakly or traded below their issue price soon after, despite strong demand. LIC closed about 8% below its issue price in 2022, and Hyundai Motor India closed about 7.2% below in 2024, as per Mint.

Did Jio Platforms break the mega listing jinx?

Ans. The Jio Platforms listing was strong: Jio listed at Rs 1,358 against Rs 1,119, a gain of 21.36%. But the closing price on listing day and the trading over the next few months will decide whether it has truly broken the pattern for mega listings in India.

How does Jio compare with Hyundai Motor India?

Ans. Among mega listings in India, Hyundai’s Rs 27,870 crore issue in 2024 was subscribed 2.28 times and closed about 7.2% below its Rs 1,960 issue price. Jio’s Rs 30,213 crore issue was subscribed 22.19 times and listed 21.36% above its issue price.

How did NSE and LIC perform on listing day?

Ans. Two other mega listings in India, NSE and LIC, went differently: as per Mint, NSE closed at Rs 1,818 against an issue price of Rs 1,785, about 1.85% higher, and LIC closed about 8% below its issue price of Rs 949. Both were offers for sale.

Why might Jio Platforms hold its gains?

Ans. Experts say Jio may differ from earlier mega listings in India, citing much higher demand, a fresh issue of about 2.9% of equity, long-term anchor investors and growth supported by tariff hikes. One expert expects gains could hold for three to six months or longer but calls it an assessment and not a promise of returns.

What are the risks for mega listings in India?

Ans. The main risks are absorbing heavy volume, profit booking, high valuation, market weakness and the small sample behind the jinx. High subscription and early premiums do not ensure lasting returns.

What should investors watch next on Jio Platforms?

Ans. For Jio and other mega listings in India, watch the closing price on listing day, trading volume and delivery in the first week and the Q2 results on 30 Oct 2026. The zone of Rs 1,340 to Rs 1,390 is the level one analyst is watching.

Is this article investment advice?

Ans. No. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell. Please check the figures against company filings and your own risk profile before you act on anything you read here.
