JSW Energy Revises 2030 Goal, Targets 30 GW Power Capacity With Renewables

In a strategic move to redefine long-term goals, JSW Energy has revised its renewable power generation capacity target to 30 GW from 20 GW by 2030. At the end of FY25, JSW Energy’s capacity was 10.8 GW, which has now increased to 12.20 GW.

The revised target is prescribed by focusing on the 18 GW project pipeline in the renewable energy space. Out of the 18 GW pipeline, only 3.2 GW is anticipated to come from thermal sources, while the remaining will be the output of solar, wind, and hydroelectric projects.

Strategy 3.0: JSW Energy’s Revised Goals

JSW Energy is to release its expected Strategy 3.0 document within the coming quarter. This document highlights the higher goal of JSW, along with a new capital expenditure plan, to surpass the ₹1.15 trillion investment reported under Strategy 2.0 in May 2023.

Under Strategy 2.0, JSW Energy has already spent around ₹17,000 crore on organic growth projects and ₹29,000 crore for strategic acquisitions, including KSK Mahanadi and O2 Power’s renewable energy assets.

Strategy 3.0 of JSW Energy is to exceed these figures robustly, accommodating the increased ambition.

Salboni Thermal Project of JSW Energy

Even though JSW is highly committed to renewables, the company is also investing in selected thermal projects, such as the ₹16,000 crore Salboni thermal power plant in West Bengal. JSW is to work on a greenfield project with two 800 MW units.

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee, will lay the foundation stone for the project on Monday. It indicates that the government is supporting the company. As per the reported timeline, the first unit will become operational in 42 months and the second unit will be in operation in 48 months.

JSW’s B2B Model

JSW Energy is operating in a B2B Model by supplying electricity to businesses and government utilities. At the same time, it does not plan to enter B2C segments such as power distribution or EV charging with immediate effect.

Final Thoughts

With a revised target of 30 GW from 20 GW by 2030, JSW Energy exhibits robust emphasis on renewable energy. The company reflected a high focus on investment in green hydrogen, battery storage, and next-gen energy technologies. The coming Strategy 3.0 document will serve as a crucial guide for investors.
