HUL Revenue Growth Hits a 14-Quarter High, but a Margin Squeeze May Be Here to Stay: What Investors Should Check

Quick Answer

HUL revenue growth reached a 14-quarter high in Q2 FY27, with underlying sales growth of 15% and underlying volume growth of 7%, but EBITDA grew only 8% and the margin slipped to 22.6%. The party pooper in the headline appears to be the margin squeeze, because management expects commodity inflation to continue in the short term. Personal Care sales grew 9% with flat volumes, so part of the growth came from price and mix and not from more units sold. This article is educational and not a recommendation.

HUL revenue growth is the number that grabbed attention, and it is genuinely strong. The question for investors is whether profit can keep pace, so this article sets out the Q2 numbers, the segments, the margin squeeze, the valuation, the dividend, and what to watch next.

Three flags. I could not open the original piece, so I read the party pooper in the headline as the margin squeeze, which is my interpretation. One report gives turnover of Rs 17,399 crore and profit of Rs 2,844 crore, up 11.5%, against Rs 18,071 crore and Rs 2,796 crore in two company-based reports, and I use the latter. The fall in EBITDA margin is 140 basis points in two sources and 114 basis points in another. It is educational and not advice.

HUL Revenue Growth and the Q2 FY27 Numbers

HUL revenue growth: Q2 FY27 item Reported figure
Turnover Rs 18,071 crore
Underlying sales growth (USG) 15%, the highest in 14 quarters
Underlying volume growth 7%
EBITDA Rs 4,089 crore, up 8%
EBITDA margin 22.6%, down 140 basis points; guided range is 22% to 24%
Reported profit after tax Rs 2,796 crore, broadly flat
Profit before exceptional items Rs 2,795 crore, up 9%
Interim dividend Rs 19 per share; record date 12 Nov 2026

Reported profit was flat because the year-ago quarter included a one-off tax gain of Rs 273 crore, so the better guide is the 9% rise before exceptional items. Even so, HUL revenue growth of 15% against profit growth of 9% shows that sales are running ahead of earnings.

Segment View: Where HUL Revenue Growth Came From

HUL revenue growth: segment Revenue Margin USG Volume
Home Care Rs 6,878 crore 16% 22% Double-digit
Beauty and Wellbeing Rs 4,319 crore 29% 16% Double-digit
Personal Care Rs 2,617 crore 17% 9% Flat
Foods Rs 3,849 crore 22% 9% Low single-digit

Home Care and Beauty and Wellbeing did the heavy lifting, both with double-digit volume growth. Personal Care is the weak spot, because its 9% sales growth came mostly from price and mix with flat volume, and oral care grew only at a low single-digit rate. The four segments add up to Rs 17,663 crore by my calculation, leaving about Rs 408 crore in other businesses.

Mass tea faced a tougher environment as inflation moderated demand, and the OZiva business was subdued. These are smaller parts of the portfolio, but they show that HUL revenue growth is not equally strong in every category.

The Party Pooper: Margin Squeeze Behind HUL Revenue Growth

The 22.6% margin is within management’s guided range of 22% to 24%, but it is about 140 basis points below a year ago, which implies a year-ago margin near 24.0% by my calculation. Management said commodity inflation is expected to continue in the short term, and it named three levers: calibrated pricing, accelerated savings and better advertising and promotion productivity. One report put the gross margin down 394 basis points to 46%, though I found that in only one source.

Underlying sales growth of 15% against underlying volume growth of 7% leaves about 8 percentage points from price and mix, by my approximation. Pricing can protect margins, but it may also slow volumes if consumers trade down, which is why HUL revenue growth and margin have to be read together.

HUL revenue growth: USG trend Underlying sales growth
H1 FY26 3%
H2 FY26 6%
H1 FY27 12% (volume growth 6%)
Q2 FY27 15% (volume growth 7%)

The improvement is steep, but it starts from a low base. Compounding 3% and 12% gives about 15% over two years, or roughly 7% a year, by my calculation, so part of the current HUL revenue growth reflects a weak comparison period.

Segment Profit Mix Behind HUL Revenue Growth

HUL revenue growth: segment (my calculation) Revenue times margin Share of segment profit
Home Care About Rs 1,100 crore About 30%
Beauty and Wellbeing About Rs 1,253 crore About 34%
Personal Care About Rs 445 crore About 12%
Foods About Rs 847 crore About 23%

Multiplying each segment’s revenue by its reported margin gives a rough profit pool of about Rs 3,645 crore, using rounded margins. The fastest-growing segment, Home Care, has the lowest margin at 16%, while Beauty and Wellbeing earns 29%. My inference is that a rising share of Home Care in sales can dilute the overall margin even when every segment performs well, which is another reason HUL revenue growth and margin can diverge.

Gross Margin and Commodity Inflation: The Cost Side of HUL Revenue Growth

Gross margin is sales less the direct cost of materials, so it is the first place commodity inflation shows up. The one report that gave a number put HUL’s gross margin at 46%, down 394 basis points, but I could not confirm it in the company-based reports. If it is right, the gross margin fell by much more than the 140 basis point drop in EBITDA margin, which would mean HUL offset part of the loss through lower spending elsewhere, such as advertising or overheads.

That reading is my inference, and the company’s own gross margin disclosure in its investor presentation is the place to check it. Management’s lever of better advertising and promotion productivity points the same way. For HUL revenue growth to turn into profit growth, either commodity inflation must ease or pricing must offset it without hurting volume growth.

Valuation and Ownership After the HUL Revenue Growth Print

HUL revenue growth: valuation item Value (previous close Rs 1,815.80)
Market capitalisation About Rs 4.26 lakh crore
Price to earnings 28.26 (industry 33.02); about 29.1 at Rs 1,865 by my calculation
Price-to-book 8.72
Return on equity 22.41%
Debt to equity 0.03
Dividend yield About 1.0% on the Rs 19 interim dividend at Rs 1,865 (my calculation)
52-week range Rs 1,758.20 to Rs 2,484.75; about 25% below the high
Promoter holding (Sep 2026) 61.9%, with FIIs at 9.26% and DIIs at 16.04%

After the rise today the stock is about 6% above its 52-week low and about 25% below its high. HUL revenue growth has improved, but the share price has not fully recovered, which suggests the market is weighing the margin squeeze against the sales recovery.

What to Watch Next After HUL Revenue Growth

  1. Margin path. Check whether the EBITDA margin stays within 22% to 24% in Q3, because HUL revenue growth only helps shareholders if profit follows.
  2. Volume growth in Personal Care. Flat volume with pricing-led growth is the area most at risk if consumers trade down.
  3. Commodity costs. Management expects inflation to continue, so look at palm oil, tea and packaging trends.
  4. Dividend and record date. The Rs 19 interim dividend has a record date of 12 November 2026.

Risks Around HUL Revenue Growth

  1. Commodity inflation. Rising input costs can squeeze margins further, as the 140 basis point fall shows.
  2. Pricing dependence. About 8 points of HUL revenue growth come from price and mix, which can reverse if demand weakens.
  3. Base effect. The earlier weak quarters make current growth look stronger than the two-year trend.
  4. Mass-market affordability. Tea and other mass categories face pressure, as management noted.
  5. Data conflicts. Reports differ on turnover, profit and margin change, so verify against the company’s results statement.

Conclusion: Judge HUL Revenue Growth Alongside Margins

HUL revenue growth of 15% and volume growth of 7% are the best in 14 quarters, but EBITDA grew 8% and the margin fell 140 basis points. The party pooper is cost pressure, and management expects it to continue for now. Watch the next quarter’s margin and volume split, and invest in line with your own risk profile.
