eMudhra shares fell 18.7% to Rs 351.20 at 12:31 PM IST on 22 Oct 2026 from the previous close of Rs 432, after a 20% lower circuit on 21 Oct from Rs 540. The headline puts the three-session fall at 34%. The cause is a security flaw in eight intermediate certificates of the global TLS business, which the company says is about 1% of revenue. The financial impact is not yet quantified by anyone, including the company.

eMudhra Shares Crash 34% in 3 Sessions: Is There More Pain Ahead?

Quick Answer

eMudhra shares crashed after the company disclosed that eight intermediate certificates in its global TLS business used weak private keys, and Google and Mozilla blocked them. The stock fell 20% to the lower circuit on 21 Oct and slid as much as 20% more on 22 Oct to a low of Rs 346, about 35% below Rs 540 by my calculation. The company says this business is about 1% of revenue and that its India digital signature and eSign businesses are unaffected, but it says the reputational risk cannot be quantified. More volatility is possible while investigations continue, so avoid acting on the fall alone.

eMudhra shares have fallen sharply for two sessions in a row because a certificate authority lives on trust, and the weak keys found in its global certificates damage that trust even if the direct revenue is small. The stock opened at Rs 385 on Thursday, touched Rs 404.90 and then dropped to a low of Rs 346, below its previous 52-week low.

This article on eMudhra shares explains what went wrong, what the company and regulators have said, how the valuation looks after the fall and what could come next. It is educational and not a recommendation, and I mark the points that rest on my own reading.

eMudhra Shares Today: How the Fall Unfolded

eMudhra shares: date What happened
19 Oct 2026 Stock fell about 3% before the disclosure
21 Oct 2026 Fell 20% from Rs 540 to the lower circuit at Rs 432, after opening at Rs 520
22 Oct 2026, open Opened at Rs 385, with a high of Rs 404.90
22 Oct 2026, low Rs 346
22 Oct 2026, 12:31 PM Rs 351.20, down 18.7%, on volume of about 69 lakh shares
52-week range Rs 364.55 to Rs 688.35, so the price is below the earlier low

From Rs 540 to Rs 351.20 the fall is about 35% (my calculation), close to the 34% in the headline, which was written at a slightly different price. Compared with the 52-week high of Rs 688.35, eMudhra shares are about 49% lower. The stock is now below its 52-week low of Rs 364.55 on the listed range, and buyers and sellers were close to balanced, with sellers a little ahead, in the live order book.

What Went Wrong With the Certificates?

eMudhra shares: security issue point Detail
Affected certificates Eight intermediate certificates in the global TLS business
Origin A key generation ceremony held on 30 Apr 2025, using FIPS 140-2 Level 3 hardware modules
Flaw A wrap and unwrap step produced a second set of weak keys; the weak set was the one published to browser root stores
Finding Google said the keys had insufficient randomness and could be compromised
Risk Weak keys could let attackers forge certificates and impersonate websites on systems that still trust them
Reported by An independent researcher, who alerted the major root programs

A certificate authority issues the digital certificates that browsers use to confirm a website is genuine. If an issuing key can be reverse-engineered, someone could create a fake certificate that looks valid. Google and Mozilla blocked the affected certificates, Google is removing the root that signed them from the Chrome Root Store, and reports say Apple and Microsoft have also acted. The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team issued an advisory and the electronics ministry formed a special investigation team, per one news report that I could not cross-check with a second source.

Risk: Browser makers can remove trust in a root at short notice, and a loss of trust can end a global certificate business quickly.

The Company's Response to the eMudhra Shares Fall

eMudhra shares: company statement What it says
Scope No genuine website certificates were issued using the affected intermediate certificates
Production use Only one of the eight was deployed in production, and none issued end-user certificates
Infrastructure No compromise of core systems and no data breach
India business Digital signature certificate and eSign businesses are unaffected and running normally
Revenue exposure Global TLS is about 1% of revenue, on separate infrastructure
Impact Reputational risk cannot currently be quantified
Action Replacement certificates for affected customers, work with root programs, root-cause investigation

The company also notes that its roots and issuing certificate authorities passed independent audits two years in a row and have been in browser trust lists since mid-2025. That reply limits the direct revenue risk but does not settle the trust question, because the flaw sat inside an approved key ceremony. Investors holding eMudhra shares are therefore pricing in damage to its name, not only the 1% of revenue.

eMudhra Shares Valuation After the Crash

eMudhra shares: valuation measure Figure
Market capitalisation at Rs 432 About Rs 3,575 crore
Market capitalisation at Rs 351.20 About Rs 2,900 crore (my calculation)
Trailing EPS Rs 14.13
P/E at Rs 351.20 About 24.9 times (my calculation)
Industry P/E 17.46 times
Price to book at Rs 351.20 About 3.2 times on book value of Rs 110.07 (my calculation)
Return on equity 11.83%
Debt to equity 0.03

At Rs 351.20 the P/E is about 25 times, which is below the 30 times it commanded before the fall but still above the industry multiple of 17. That means eMudhra shares are not obviously undervalued even after losing a third of their value. Q1 FY27 profit was about Rs 32 crore, up about 29% from a year earlier on revenue of Rs 190.72 crore, and FY26 profit was Rs 110.04 crore on revenue of Rs 701.58 crore. The next results are listed for 4 Nov 2026 by one data source that I could not confirm with the company.

Risk: A growth stock that has lost a third of its price in days can keep falling if funds sell their holdings, and domestic institutional holding has already dropped from 16.75% to 8.75% since Dec 2025.

Who Holds eMudhra Shares?

eMudhra shares: shareholder group Holding at Sep 2026
Promoters 54.4%, flat
Domestic institutions 8.75%, down from 16.75% in Dec 2025
Foreign institutions 3.54%, down from 3.92% in June 2026
Mutual funds 6.96% at the June 2026 quarter, down from 7.30%
Public 32.52%

Institutions had already cut their holdings before the disclosure, which means fewer natural buyers are left to absorb selling in eMudhra shares. A larger public holding of 32.52% can add to volatility, because retail holders tend to sell quickly on bad news (my reading). The promoter holding is steady, which is a small comfort, but it does not stop the price from falling.

Is There More Pain Ahead for eMudhra Shares?

eMudhra shares: scenario (my reading) What would need to happen Likely effect
Stabilisation Root programs accept the replacement certificates and the investigation finds no wider flaw Relief bounce, though the trust damage may linger
Further pressure More certificates are found weak or customers leave the global TLS business Another leg down toward lower levels
India impact Regulators question the group's wider practices A much larger hit, since the India business is most of revenue

These scenarios are my reading and not forecasts. The direct financial hit looks small, but eMudhra shares fell on trust, and trust is slow to rebuild. The key questions are whether the investigation widens, whether global customers leave and whether Indian regulators act. Until those are answered, the volatility in eMudhra shares is likely to continue.

What to Watch Next on eMudhra Shares

  1. The outcome of the company's root-cause investigation and any new disclosure to the exchanges
  2. Decisions by Apple and Microsoft, and the final status of the root in the Chrome Root Store
  3. Any action by the electronics ministry or the Indian emergency response team
  4. Q2 results, listed for 4 Nov 2026, and any comment on global TLS revenue
  5. Whether eMudhra shares hold the Rs 346 low or make a lower one

Conclusion

eMudhra shares have lost about a third of their value in days because weak keys in eight global certificates have damaged trust in a certificate authority. The company says the exposed business is about 1% of revenue, but it cannot yet measure the reputational effect, and the stock still trades above the industry multiple. Wait for clear disclosures, read the filings and size any position to your own risk.
