Crude oil is above $100 a barrel (Brent about $104.4 on 15 Oct 2026) while petrol and diesel prices are unchanged, which could squeeze state-run oil marketers. Equirus Securities ranks HPCL as the most vulnerable (refining to marketing ratio of 51%), then IOCL (80%) and BPCL (74%, the best placed). IOC traded near Rs 127.80, BPCL near Rs 288.90 and HPCL near Rs 331.05.

Crude Oil Prices Above $100 a Barrel: Why HPCL, IOCL and BPCL Could Face Earnings Pressure, Experts Decode

Quick Answer

Crude oil above 100 dollars a barrel could squeeze the margins of India's state-run oil marketers if petrol and diesel prices stay unchanged, with HPCL facing the greatest earnings pressure, followed by IOCL and then BPCL in that order. Brent was about 104.4 dollars on 15 October 2026, while petrol in Delhi stayed at Rs 102.12 and diesel at Rs 95.20 per litre. Equirus Securities says HPCL is the most exposed because only 51% of its marketing needs are met by its own refining, against 74% for BPCL and 80% for IOCL. Whether the pressure shows up in earnings depends on how long crude stays high, whether retail prices are raised and how the government shares the burden.

Oil marketing companies buy crude at global prices and sell petrol, diesel and LPG at prices that are largely held steady. When crude rises and retail prices do not, the gap comes out of the companies' margins, and that is the concern now.

This guide explains how high crude oil hurts marketers, why HPCL is ranked as the most vulnerable, what brokerages have said, where the share prices stand and what could change the picture. I flag reports that conflict or that I could not verify.

The Equirus ranking dates from 11 September, and it describes direction and not a quantified earnings loss.

Crude Oil Today: Where Prices Stand

Item Level on 15 Oct 2026 Note
Brent crude About 104.4 dollars, down 1.5% Other reports show 104.21 and about 106
WTI crude About 93.9 dollars, down 1.2% Reversed the previous day's gains
Petrol in Delhi Rs 102.12 per litre Unchanged
Petrol in Mumbai Rs 111.21 per litre Unchanged
Diesel in Delhi Rs 95.20 per litre Unchanged
Diesel in Mumbai Rs 97.83 per litre Unchanged

Crude eased on 15 October after the US was reported to be considering easing restrictions on vessels that had carried Russian, Iranian and Venezuelan oil, which could cut shipping costs. At the same time, two vessels were reported sunk near the Strait of Hormuz within 24 hours, so supply risk remains.

Retail prices did not change in most cities, apart from a small diesel cut of Rs 0.47 in Jaipur, so the marketers are absorbing the cost of crude at current levels.

Risk: A fresh supply scare in the Gulf can lift crude quickly and deepen the squeeze.

Why Crude Oil Above 100 Dollars Hurts Oil Marketers

Mechanism Effect
Retail prices held Cost of crude oil rises but selling prices do not, so marketing margins shrink or turn negative
LPG under-recovery Cooking gas is also sold below cost when crude oil is high
Inventory Higher priced stock and working capital needs raise financing cost
Refining offset Refining margins can rise, which helps companies that refine more than they sell
Government role Tax cuts, price increases or compensation can reduce the pressure

The result is a split inside each company. Refining may earn more when crude oil is volatile, while marketing loses money. The balance depends on how much of a company's sales come from its own refineries, which is why the ranking by Equirus uses the refining to marketing ratio.

Risk: A fall in retail margins can hit earnings before any benefit from refining shows up.

Why HPCL Faces the Most Pressure: The Equirus View

Company Refining to marketing ratio Distillate yield Equirus view
HPCL 51% 76% Most vulnerable: lowest internal refining cover, most purchased and imported products, highest debt
IOCL 80% 80% Has a refining buffer, but large exposure to marketing, LPG, inventory and petrochemical losses
BPCL 74% 85% Better placed: integration, highest distillate yield, Bina crude flexibility and a stronger balance sheet

The report says oil marketers could face negative marketing margins on petrol and diesel if crude oil stays above 100 dollars and retail prices are held. It gives no rupee estimates and no quantified earnings impact for any company, so the ranking is about direction.

A refining to marketing ratio of 51% means HPCL refines about half of what it sells and buys the rest at market prices, which exposes it more when crude oil and product prices rise.

Risk: The Equirus ranking is a view from September, and conditions have moved since.

What Else Brokerages Have Said

Source View Note
UBS (March 2026) Downgraded HPCL, BPCL and IOC as crude oil crossed 100 dollars One report says HPCL to Sell and IOC and BPCL to Neutral, with marketing margin estimates cut 43% to 45%
Elara and MOFSL (as reported by one site) Under-recoveries on petrol and diesel of Rs 11.8 to Rs 25 per litre at various crude levels I could not verify these figures against the original notes
Fitch Said oil marketers' financial defences had become very brittle As reported by one site

The figures above come from a secondary site, and the crude oil price in that report was far higher, about 123 dollars, so they do not describe today's level of about 104 dollars. They show how large the pressure can be, but not what it is today.

Risk: Using under-recovery figures from a much higher crude oil price overstates today's pressure.

OMC Share Prices on 15 October

Stock Price Move
IOC About Rs 127.80 Not reported
BPCL About Rs 288.90 Down 0.26%
HPCL About Rs 331.05 Not reported

The three stocks were not sharply lower on the day, which suggests that part of the pressure was already priced in. I did not find a Q2 FY27 results date for these companies, and the results will show how much of the margin squeeze reached the accounts.

Risk: A relief move in crude oil can lift these stocks quickly, and a spike can push them down just as fast.

What Could Change the Picture for Crude Oil and OMCs

  1. A sustained fall in crude oil below 100 dollars, which would ease marketing losses
  2. An increase in petrol, diesel or LPG prices, or a cut in taxes
  3. Government compensation or sharing of the burden
  4. Higher refining margins that offset marketing losses
  5. The Q2 FY27 results and management commentary from HPCL, IOCL and BPCL

Conclusion

Crude oil above 100 dollars is a risk for state-run oil marketers while retail prices stay frozen, and HPCL looks the most exposed on Equirus's measure. The size of the hit depends on how long crude oil stays high and on government action, so watch prices and results.

Which oil marketer is most vulnerable?

Ans. Equirus Securities ranks HPCL as the most vulnerable, followed by IOCL, with BPCL best placed.

Why is HPCL more exposed?

Ans. It refines only about 51% of what it markets, buys more products at market prices and has the highest debt, per Equirus.

What is the Brent crude oil price?

Ans. About 104.4 dollars on 15 October 2026, down 1.5%, with other reports showing 104.21 and about 106.

Have petrol and diesel prices changed?

Ans. Not in most cities on 15 October. Delhi petrol was Rs 102.12 and diesel Rs 95.20 per litre.

Do high crude oil prices help any part of these companies?

Ans. Refining margins can rise, which helps companies that refine a larger share of what they sell.

What did UBS say about oil marketers?

Ans. UBS downgraded HPCL, BPCL and IOC in March 2026 as crude oil crossed 100 dollars. One report gives the new ratings as Sell for HPCL and Neutral for the other two.

Is this article investment advice?

Ans. No. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell.
