Why Is the Stock Market Down Today? Top 3 Reasons Explained

At about 10:10 am IST on 22 Oct 2026 the Sensex was at 73,215.60, down 494.09 points (0.67%), and the Nifty 50 was at 22,632.85, down 178.50 points (0.78%), a third straight Sensex Nifty fall. From the 16 Oct close the Sensex is down about 1,513 points (2.03%) and the Nifty about 513 points (2.22%), my calculation. India VIX was 16.14, up 2.93%. Prices change through the session, so check NSE and BSE before you act on any level here.

Quick Answer

The stock market down today picture comes from three overlapping reasons: Brent crude above $110 a barrel, heavy FII selling through October and weak breadth with earnings disappointments in individual shares. At about 10:10 am IST on 22 Oct 2026 the Sensex was down 0.67% and the Nifty 50 was down 0.78%, even though Wall Street, Japan and South Korea closed higher overnight. Foreign institutional investors are net sellers of about Rs 48,895 crore in October in provisional data, while domestic institutions have bought about Rs 52,984 crore. The Nifty is testing the 22,630 to 22,650 support zone, so the next move depends on crude and on whether foreign selling slows.

Stock market down today is the question on every screen because the Sensex and the Nifty 50 are lower for a third straight session on 22 Oct 2026, with crude oil above $110, foreign selling and weak breadth the three main reasons. The fall comes while global markets are rising, which points to local causes and not a worldwide sell-off, my reading.

This article explains why the stock market is down today in three reasons, shows where the Sensex and the Nifty stand, lists what is not driving the fall and sets out the levels and events to watch next. Where a number is my own calculation or my reading, I have said so. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell any share.

Stock Market Down Today: Where the Sensex and Nifty Stand

Stock market down today: index Level at about 10:10 am IST Change on the day Previous close
Sensex in the stock market down today 73,215.60 Down 494.09 points (0.67%) 73,709.69
Nifty 50 in the stock market down today 22,632.85 Down 178.50 points (0.78%) 22,811.35
Bank Nifty 54,676.90 Down 300 points (0.55%) 54,976.90
Nifty Midcap 50 16,320.45 Down 1.09% 16,500.20
Nifty 500 21,639.05 Down 0.91% 21,837.90
India VIX in the stock market down today 16.14 Up 2.93% 15.68

The stock market down today is part of a three-session Sensex Nifty fall. The Sensex closed at 74,729.27 on 16 Oct, 73,852.90 on 19 Oct and 73,709.69 on 21 Oct, while the Nifty closed at 23,146.15, 22,888.95 and 22,811.35. The daily data I pulled shows no session on 20 Oct, so I count the 19 Oct, 21 Oct and 22 Oct sessions as the three. The Nifty day range so far is 22,554.85 to 22,697.55, which means it has already dipped below the 22,630 to 22,650 support zone flagged by SBI Securities on 21 Oct.

Reason 1 for the Stock Market Down Today: Crude Oil Above $110

Stock market down today: crude and currency signal Reading
Brent crude on 21 Oct in the stock market down today About $110.15 (Devdiscourse), $109.64 (NDTV digest) and $110.51 on a data ticker; one report says up 2.23% to above $111
Brent on 14 Oct About $106 per barrel
Rise from 14 Oct to the $110.51 reading About 4.2% (my calculation)
Rupee against the US dollar About 94.46 (Kotak Neo) and 94.71 (another report), the strongest since early September
Cause cited for crude Geopolitical supply worries, with Red Sea shipping risk named by NDTV
Oil marketing example for the stock market down today HPCL Q1 FY27 standalone net loss of Rs 11,526 crore against a profit of Rs 4,371 crore a year earlier

Brent crude above $110 matters for India because the country imports most of its oil. Higher crude oil prices raise import costs, feeds inflation and squeezes the margins of companies that cannot pass on fuel prices, which is why reports said elevated crude and continued foreign selling outweighed optimism about India-US trade talks on 21 Oct. HPCL shows the margin risk: its Q1 FY27 standalone loss of Rs 11,526 crore followed suppressed marketing margins, and the shares were down 1.71% at Rs 341.35 today before its Q2 results. The rupee has actually strengthened to about 94.5, so the currency is not the main pressure this week (my reading).

Risk: If Brent keeps rising, inflation worries and margin pressure can weigh on the market further, and a fall in crude would ease that pressure quickly.

Reason 2: FII Selling Keeps the Stock Market Down Today

Stock market down today: provisional cash flow, Rs crore FII net DII net
14 Oct Minus 1,857 Plus 2,670
15 Oct Minus 5,285 Plus 3,319
16 Oct Plus 1,166 Minus 3,661
19 Oct Minus 1,149 Plus 3,201
21 Oct Plus 1,022 Plus 1,614
1 to 21 Oct total behind the stock market down today Minus 48,895 Plus 52,984

Behind the stock market down today, foreign institutional investors have been steady sellers in October, with the heaviest day on 15 Oct at about Rs 5,285 crore, while domestic institutional investors have absorbed the supply. The provisional figures for 21 Oct show foreign investors as small net buyers at Rs 1,022 crore, which conflicts with reports of continued foreign selling that day, so I treat the 21 Oct reading as unconfirmed until final data. Foreign investors were also net short about 2.78 lakh index futures contracts on 21 Oct, up 2,302 on the day, per the same data. The stock market down today therefore reflects a month of FII selling and not one bad session.

Risk: Domestic buying has so far matched foreign selling, but if the gap widens the index can fall faster than it has in the past three sessions.

Reason 3: Weak Breadth and Earnings Shocks Behind the Stock Market Down Today

Stock market down today: stock or index What happened
Eternal Q2 profit and revenue rose but, per one report, came in below street expectations; shares fell 4.5% to Rs 305.65 on 21 Oct and were Rs 311.05 today
Swiggy ahead of results Down 5.68% at Rs 210.95 at 10:10 am IST on 22 Oct
KEI Industries Down 9.92% at Rs 3,810.70 although profit after tax rose 29%, because the profit margin fell to 6.95% from 7.46%
M&M Financial Services Down 5.28% at Rs 281.75 despite a 55% rise in Q2 profit to Rs 882 crore
Adani Green Energy Fell about 3.6% on 21 Oct after Q2 results and was down 1.48% today
Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 on 21 Oct Down 1.58% and 2.37%
Technical picture in the stock market down today Nifty 50 at 22,668.90 against a 20-day exponential moving average of 22,863.64 and a 50-day average of 23,440.78; 14-day RSI 50.8 (my data pull)

Market breadth is the third reason for the stock market down today. On 21 Oct the Nifty fell only 0.34% but the Midcap 100 lost 1.58% and the Smallcap 100 lost 2.37%, so the damage was wider than the headline index suggests. Several shares fell even on decent results, such as KEI Industries and M&M Financial Services, which tells me investors are punishing any margin or expectation miss (my reading). With the Nifty below its 20-day average, momentum buyers have fewer reasons to step in, and profit booking after the sharp 15 and 16 Oct rebound adds to the pressure.

Risk: Stocks that fall on good headline profits can fall further if the Q2 earnings season brings more margin misses.

What Is Not Pulling the Stock Market Down Today

Global signal behind the stock market down today Latest reading
Dow Jones on Wednesday 52,856.09, up 0.69%
S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite 7,757.17, up 0.58%, and 26,702.86, up 1.05%
Nikkei 225 and KOSPI 64,621.24, up 0.85%, and 5,735.66, up 3.29%
GIFT Nifty at 7:35 am IST 22,644, down 84.50 points (0.37%)
Nifty IT on 21 Oct Up 2.52% to 2.88% depending on the source, the only major sector in positive territory

Global markets did not cause the stock market down today, because the US, Japanese and South Korean indices all rose. The GIFT Nifty reading also differs by source and time: the headline for the outlook shows about 22,682, down 46.50 points, while Kotak Neo shows 22,644 at 7:35 am IST. Information technology shares have held up, with Wipro up 1.36% and Coforge up 1.25% today, so the weakness is concentrated in financials, consumer, auto and metals (my reading).

What to Watch Next After the Stock Market Down Today

  1. Whether Brent crude holds above $110 or eases after the stock market down today
  2. Daily foreign institutional investor flows against the Rs 48,895 crore October outflow
  3. The Nifty day low of 22,554.85 and the 22,500 to 22,400 support zone cited by Goodreturns
  4. Q2 results from Swiggy, HPCL, Adani Energy Solutions and Havells today, and Infosys and Shriram Finance on 23 Oct
  5. India VIX, now 16.14, for signs that fear is rising

Conclusion

The stock market down today is a third straight Sensex Nifty fall driven by crude above $110, a month of foreign selling and weak breadth, while global markets rose. The Sensex is down about 2% and the Nifty about 2.2% from the 16 Oct close (my calculation). Levels and flows can change within hours, so check live data and size positions to your own risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the stock market down today, 22 Oct 2026?

Ans. The Sensex and Nifty 50 are lower for a third straight session because of Brent crude above $110, foreign institutional selling of about Rs 48,895 crore in October and weak breadth with earnings misses in some shares. Global markets rose overnight, so the causes look local.

How much have the Sensex and Nifty fallen in three sessions?

Ans. From the 16 Oct close to about 10:10 am IST on 22 Oct, the Sensex is down about 1,513 points (2.03%) and the Nifty 50 about 513 points (2.22%), my calculation. The data I pulled shows no 20 Oct session.

Is foreign selling the main reason for the stock market down today?

Ans. It is one of three. Foreign institutions sold on net in October, but provisional data shows small net buying on 21 Oct, which conflicts with reports of continued selling. Crude and weak breadth matter as much.

What is the Nifty support level in the stock market down today?

Ans. SBI Securities flagged 22,630 to 22,650 on 21 Oct, and the Nifty has already traded below it today with a low of 22,554.85. Goodreturns gives 22,500 to 22,400 as the next zone, and these are reference levels, not guarantees.

Is global weakness behind the stock market down today?

Ans. No. The Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed up on Wednesday, and the Nikkei and KOSPI rose. GIFT Nifty still pointed lower, so the pressure is mostly domestic.

Which sectors hold up in the stock market down today?

Ans. Information technology has held up best. Nifty IT rose between 2.52% and 2.88% on 21 Oct, and Wipro and Coforge were higher today. Financials, auto, metals and consumer shares have been weaker.

What should investors watch after the stock market down today?

Ans. Watch Brent crude against $110, daily foreign flows, the Nifty at 22,500 and the Q2 results due today and on 23 Oct. India VIX at 16.14 is a useful gauge of fear.
