BPCL’s profit was reported at about Rs 4,863 to Rs 4,993 crore, 21% to 22.5% lower than a year earlier, with revenue up about 30%. Brokerage estimates had expected petrol margins near Rs 2.9 per litre and diesel near Rs 1.3 per litre in Q2.

The overhang is LPG under-recoveries. Q1 FY27 produced a combined loss of about Rs 18,150 crore. Experts therefore prefer upstream companies such as ONGC and Oil India, which gain from higher crude realisations.

Which is better, HPCL or BPCL?

Ans. Brokerages see BPCL as better placed than HPCL: BPCL refines about 74% of its throughput against HPCL's 51% and has a higher distillate yield of 85% against 76%.
