If a client has a net sell obligation and the clearing corporation accepts the EPI, it will not collect margin from the broker on the client’s later cash-segment trades, up to the EPI value. The relief is real time, excludes futures and options, and starts around 22 Feb 2027. Stockbrokers are expected to seek clarity because they, not the client, carry the shortfall risk, and this article is educational and not a recommendation.

A rule that frees up margin sounds simple, but it changes who bears the risk in a trade. This article explains how peak margin works, what the early pay-in circular changes, a worked example with numbers, why stockbrokers want clarity, and what clients and brokers should watch before the effective date.

Three flags. I could not open the original report on brokers seeking clarity, so the list of questions below is my reading of what the circular leaves open and not a list the brokers issued. Another article I read on the circular gave no effective date, so I used the date from the circular text itself. Brokers’ systems may also change how the rule applies in practice. It is educational and not advice.

<a credit for the sale value was posted, up to 100% of the sale value could serve as margin for positions across segments. The change in the 22 Oct circular is that a client’s later cash-segment trades made against the EPI no longer need fresh margin from the broker.

Peak margin exists because a client can take large positions and reverse them within the day, and the clearing corporation needs cover for the highest exposure and not only the end-of-day position.
