Family offices and angel investors put about $760 million into Indian AI companies in 2026, up nearly 50%, with backers such as Premji Invest and Claypond Capital. Overall private equity and VC activity was weak in the first half of 2026, down 36% to $20.5 billion, while data centres attracted record deal value. This is educational and not a recommendation.

Headlines say India missed the AI wave, while investors keep writing cheques. This article explains what the India AI race looks like in numbers, who is funding it, where private equity and venture capital money is going, why data centres dominate, and what the risks and unknowns are, using reports published in July and October 2026.

Three flags. Funding totals come from different trackers (Stanford’s AI Index via Bloomberg, Tracxn, and EY-IVCA) that measure different things, so they cannot be added together. EY-IVCA reports record data centre and allied sector value of $33.3 billion for the first half of 2026, which is larger than its total PE and VC figure of $20.5 billion, so that number appears to use a different basis and I could not reconcile it. I could not open the original headline article, so I built this from the underlying reports. It is educational and not advice.

<a Of the $45.3 billion across 86 deals since 2021, 21 data centre deals account for 93% of the value. That makes the India AI race, in capital terms, an infrastructure story first and a software story second.

Business Today adds that large conglomerates such as Adani, Reliance Industries and the Tata Group are investing in data centres and semiconductor manufacturing. This is a report of corporate plans, not a view on any listed stock.

Where the India AI Race Looks Thin

Early stage. Waterfield’s Riddhiman Jain describes the investing universe as very early, and the largest named AI rounds here are $27 million to $130 million.

Scale gap. India’s $15 billion over 13 years is about 2% of the US total, so closing even part of the gap needs several times more capital.

Exits. IPO exits fell 47% to $801 million in 1H2026, which can discourage funds from backing long-dated AI bets.

Concentration. Most infrastructure value sits in 21 data centre deals, so a few projects drive the totals.

None of these points says the India AI race is lost.
