A headline that mentions 29% upside does not match this figure, and the highest target I could find, Rs 2,170 from Asian Markets Securities, is about 21.3% above the current price (my calculation). Other brokers sit between Rs 1,950 and Rs 2,050. This is educational and not a recommendation.

A new broker call on a recently listed exchange stock raises three questions: how the NSE share price target was built, how it compares with other targets, and what could make it wrong. This article answers each using Jefferies’ stated assumptions, the other targets I could verify, the valuation and the chart at 9:46 AM IST.

Two flags. First, the 29% upside in a headline is not supported by the Jefferies figure, so I use 17.33%. Second, I could not read the full Jefferies report, so details come from news coverage of it, and I have not seen the earnings forecasts behind the target. It is educational and not advice.

<a When about 60% of operating revenue comes from equity options, the NSE share price target depends on trading volumes in options, which move with market volatility. Jefferies points out that the NSE’s revenue is correlated with the VIX, the volatility index, which means revenue tends to rise when markets are jumpy and ease when they are calm.

Diversification is what supports the premium. If technology infrastructure grows from 8% to 11% of revenue and options fall from 60% to 50%, earnings become less dependent on trader activity. That shift would take years, and the NSE share price target assumes the margin gains and the diversification arrive on time.

Valuation: What the Market Is Paying

At about 34 times FY28 earnings, the NSE trades at an 18% discount to the BSE on the same measure, according to the Jefferies note. That is a more conservative way to build a target than assuming the multiple expands, though it still needs the earnings growth to materialise.

Sensitivity: How the NSE Share Price Target Changes With the Multiple

The target is the product of an earnings estimate and a multiple, so a simple sensitivity check is useful. Holding the Jefferies earnings estimate fixed, the table scales the NSE share price target by the multiple used. These are my calculations for illustration and not broker figures.

Multiple on December 2028 earnings

Implied NSE share price target (Rs, my calculation)

Versus Rs 1,789.10

30 times

About 1,787

About flat

35 times (Jefferies)

2,085

About +16.5%

40 times

About 2,383

About +33.2%

The result is that a multiple of 30 erases the entire upside, while 40 doubles it.
