The headline figure of 22% is a little deeper than that report, and I could not retrieve the index close for 27 Oct, so treat the exact decline as approximate.

Quick Answer

The Nifty FMCG index has fallen about 21% to 22% in 2026 because input costs have squeezed margins, price hikes have only partly offset them and food inflation of 7.74% in September is hurting rural demand. The index trades near 30 times trailing earnings against a five-year median near 42 times, a discount of about 28%, which is why some analysts call it a selective opportunity before Diwali. Margin pressure may last a couple more quarters, and a July technical call to accumulate near 49,500 to 47,800 with a stop loss at 46,000 has already been breached. This is educational and not a recommendation.

The Nifty FMCG index is usually seen as a defensive part of the market, so a fall of more than a fifth in one year has drawn attention ahead of Diwali on 8 Nov 2026. This article looks at why the Nifty FMCG index fell, what the valuation says, what analysts expect and where the main constituents stand on 27 Oct 2026.

I could not retrieve today’s close of the Nifty FMCG index or the full constituent list with weights, and I did not find results for Hindustan Unilever or ITC for this quarter. The 22% headline and the 21% report differ, and I show both. Nestle India has the lowest RSI at 24.9, which is oversold, and its Supertrend is still negative. In the July Emkay note, Godrej Consumer was a buy at Rs 1,100 to Rs 1,050 with a stop loss at Rs 980, and Dabur India at Rs 440 to Rs 420 with a stop loss at Rs 400. Both are now below those stops (my comparison), so older levels should not be reused.

Should You Buy the Nifty FMCG Index Before Diwali?

There is no single answer. The case for waiting is that margin pressure may last a couple more quarters and the El Nino and food inflation risks are open. The case for researching now is that the Nifty FMCG index sits near a four-year low, the valuation discount is about 28% and Diwali demand could help volumes. Muhurat trading on Diwali day is a symbolic session, and it does not change the earnings trend. Past data cannot tell the exact bottom, and a reader should verify each company’s latest results first.

A reader who wants exposure could study individual quality names or index funds, spread purchases over time instead of buying all at once and set a stop loss and a position size before acting. The Nifty FMCG index also contains very different businesses, from cigarettes and beverages to biscuits and soaps, which face different cost pressures.

Risks to the Nifty FMCG Index

Margin pressure. Brokerages expect operating margins to fall by about 45 to 150 basis points, and relief may take until the March 2027 quarter.

Food inflation. Rural food inflation of 8.06% limits spending power in villages.

El Nino. Weak farm output could push the earnings recovery beyond H1 FY28.

Earnings downgrades. Lower valuations do not protect the Nifty FMCG index if estimates keep falling.

Broken levels. The July accumulate zone and stop loss were breached, so past support levels are not reliable.

Conclusion: The Nifty FMCG Index Has Reset Lower but Is Not Yet Proven

The Nifty FMCG index is down about 21% to 22% in 2026 and trades near 30 times earnings, but margins and rural demand are still under pressure.
