OMC stocks such as BPCL, HPCL and IOCL buy it at global prices and turn it into petrol, diesel and cooking gas. Their earnings come from two sources, refining margins and marketing margins. Refining margins, the gap between product prices and crude, can rise when product prices climb, while marketing margins are squeezed when pump prices do not rise as fast as crude.

OMC stocks: driver

Effect of higher crude

Marketing margins

Fall if retail petrol and diesel prices do not rise with crude

Under-recoveries

Rise on products sold below cost, such as cooking gas, unless compensated; under-recoveries hurt profit directly

Refining margins

Can improve when product prices rise faster than crude, as diesel tightness suggests

Inventory gains

Can lift reported profit when crude rises, then reverse when it falls

Working capital

Needs more borrowing as crude costs more

Under-recoveries are the part that investors watch most closely.
