It moves the settlement date for Monday’s trades, shifts the weekly Nifty expiry, and leaves positions open for an extra day while global markets keep trading. Monday itself was also a weak session, with the Sensex and Nifty down about 1.2% at 3:24 PM IST.

This guide covers what is open and closed on 20 Oct, the settlement and expiry changes, the upcoming stock market holiday dates through December, and a short checklist for traders and investors. Three reports list Tuesday 10 Nov and one calendar lists Monday 9 Nov, so I show 10 Nov and flag the gap. The Muhurat session on Sunday 8 Nov is usually held in the evening for about an hour, but one calendar gives only an approximate window and the exchanges announce the exact timing closer to the date.

Risk: Holiday dates and segment timings can change by exchange circular. Do not plan an order, a margin top-up or a payout around the closure without checking the latest notice from NSE, BSE and MCX.

What Traders and Investors Can Do Before the Stock Market Holiday

Check open positions in the derivatives segment, because there is no trading on 20 Oct to square them off

Keep margin ready for the 21 Oct open, since the closure does not pause overnight risk from global markets

Remember that fund transfers requested after the cut-off on 19 Oct will reach your account on 21 Oct

Plan MCX trades for the MCX evening session only, and confirm the closing time with your broker

Review the next stock market holiday dates in November, including Muhurat trading on Sunday 8 Nov

None of this changes the long-term case for any share. A stock market holiday is a scheduling event, and the useful habit is to check the exchange calendar at the start of every week.

Conclusion

Tuesday 20 Oct 2026 is a stock market holiday for Dussehra.
