The headline adds that spending per enterprise fell from Rs 260 crore in FY23 to Rs 160 crore in FY26, which would be a fall of about 38% (my calculation), though I could not verify those two figures. The RBI, by contrast, reports a rising pipeline of Rs 5.6 lakh crore of project intentions in FY26, and the NIPFP warns that few announced projects turn into spending. A weak private capex cycle can delay the stock market revival in capital goods, cement and banks, but the stock market also depends on earnings, global flows and valuations.

Private capex is the money that companies spend on factories, machinery and power plants, and it is the part of investment that the government cannot fully replace. When it slows, orders for capital goods, steel and cement slow with it.

This guide sets out the data from the National Statistical Office (NSO), the RBI and the NIPFP, explains why firms are holding back, and traces the effect on the stock market.
