Eligible does not mean sold, because many promoters and long-term investors hold on, but a sudden rise in tradable supply can add short-term selling pressure and volatility. At about Rs 95.8 per dollar the amount is roughly Rs 2.3 lakh crore, or about $242 million per company on average (my calculation). Investors should track unlock dates, who is being unlocked and how much of the free float they represent before buying or selling.

IPO lock-in expiry is one of the most predictable supply events in the market, yet many investors learn about it only after the share price falls. A lock-in is a period after listing when certain shareholders cannot sell, and when it ends their shares can be traded freely.

This guide explains how a lock-in works, the Nuvama estimate for October 2026 to January 2027, what happened in an earlier period, why prices can move around unlock dates, and a checklist for investors.

A note on the numbers: I could not open the Nuvama report for this period. The $24 billion, 99 companies and the promoter comment come from the headline, and the history below is from an earlier Nuvama report on a different period.

<p
