Today showed a selective midday advance, with the represented market-cap-weighted constituent move at 0.09% as of 28 August 2026 at 12:30:00 PM IST.

Market breadth remained weak: 18 constituents advanced, 31 declined and one was unchanged, producing an advance-decline ratio of 0.58.

IT was the clear leadership group, rising 3.17% with all five represented IT stocks higher; TCS, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Wipro led the gainers.

Financials, iron and steel, chemicals and construction materials were among the weaker pockets. The next-session watch point is whether IT leadership broadens beyond a concentrated group of large stocks.

Market summary

The market picture at midday was positive at the heavyweight level but uneven beneath the surface. Large IT stocks lifted the represented basket even as more constituents declined than advanced. For a normal retail investor, this means the headline direction and the experience of an average stock were not fully aligned during the session.

Across the 50 represented constituents, 18 stocks rose, 31 fell and one was unchanged. The equal-weighted constituent estimate was up just 0.03%, while the market-cap-weighted constituent estimate gained 0.09%. Total volume stood at 165.45 million shares and estimated turnover was Rs 11,896.19 crore. The basket represented market capitalisation of Rs 195.73 lakh crore, underlining how gains in large-cap IT names influenced the midday tone.

The contrast is important: the market-cap-weighted measure outpaced the equal-weighted measure because leadership came from sizeable companies rather than a broad sweep of stocks. Investors tracking Univest Market View can therefore separate the positive contribution of heavyweight leaders from the softer participation across the wider constituent set.

Why did the market move?

The defining move was a synchronised advance in IT. The five-stock IT group rose 3.17%, and every represented constituent in the group was in the green. Tata Consultancy Services gained 3.87%, HCL Technologies rose 2.96%, Tech Mahindra advanced 2.73%, Infosys added 2.52% and Wipro increased 2.44%.

This leadership carried meaningful weight. TCS, with a represented market capitalisation of Rs 821,667.68 crore, traded near its day high at 93.5% of its intraday range. Infosys contributed a 2.52% rise on turnover of Rs 626.10 crore, while HCLTech and Tech Mahindra also remained above their opening prices. Wipro was near its day high, adding to the evidence of firm IT momentum through midday.

Outside IT, the positive contribution was more measured. Infrastructure stock Larsen & Toubro was up 0.28%, while Titan gained 0.38% and Hindalco rose 0.32%. Healthcare was marginally positive at 0.22%, although its internal participation was split evenly between two gainers and two decliners. Automobile & Ancillaries gained 0.13%, despite four of its six stocks declining.

Counterbalancing this strength, finance fell 0.85% with all four represented constituents lower. Bank weakness was visible in ICICI Bank, down 1.28%, and IndusInd Bank, down 1.32%. Iron and steel declined 1.05%, led by Tata Steel’s 1.22% fall.

Overall, strong and concentrated IT buying supported the represented heavyweight basket, while weakness in financials and several cyclical groups restricted market-wide participation.

Market breadth analysis

The advance-decline ratio of 0.58 captures the narrowness of the midday move: for every 100 declining stocks, only about 58 advanced. With 31 decliners against 18 gainers, the broader constituent list had a defensive tilt even though the market-cap-weighted estimate remained positive.

The 0.03% equal-weighted gain was modest compared with the 0.09% market-cap-weighted gain. That gap indicates that the largest advancing companies, particularly in IT, had a bigger effect on aggregate market value than the typical constituent had on equal-weight performance. It is a constructive sign for leaders, but not yet evidence of broad participation.

For the rest of the session, a useful marker is whether advancers begin to catch up with decliners. Sustained improvement in breadth would make the positive market-cap-weighted move more widely supported; continued weak breadth would keep attention on the concentration of leadership.

Sector snapshot

IT sets the pace

IT was decisively the strongest multi-stock group, up 3.17% with all five constituents advancing. TCS led at 3.87%, followed by HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Wipro. The full-group advance, along with several stocks holding in the middle to upper part of their daily ranges, made IT the session’s clearest leadership area.

Mixed resilience in healthcare and automobiles

Healthcare rose 0.22%, but the result was balanced rather than broad: Apollo Hospitals gained 0.99% and Sun Pharma rose 0.25%, while Cipla and Dr. Reddy’s were lower. Automobile & Ancillaries added 0.13%, led by Bajaj Auto’s 1.78% rise and Hero MotoCorp’s 1.34% gain, even as Eicher Motors, Tata Motors, Mahindra & Mahindra and Maruti Suzuki declined.

Financials and metals lag

Finance was the weakest multi-stock laggard at 0.85% lower, with all four constituents declining. Iron and steel fell 1.05% as both Tata Steel and JSW Steel traded lower. Chemicals and construction materials also showed declines through Asian Paints and Ultratech Cement respectively, but each is represented here by one constituent and should not be read as broad group participation.

Top 5 gainers

Stock

Move

Why it matters

TCS

Rs 2,335.40, up 3.87%

Led IT and traded near its day high.

HCL Technologies

Rs 1,320.00, up 2.96%

Extended the all-stock IT advance.

Tech Mahindra

Rs 1,628.30, up 2.73%

Remained in the middle-to-upper part of its daily range.

Infosys

Rs 1,138.80, up 2.52%

Its size and turnover strengthened IT’s market impact.

Wipro

Rs 180.70, up 2.44%

Traded near its day high, supporting sector momentum.

Top 5 losers

Stock

Move

Why it matters

IndusInd Bank

Rs 989.70, down 1.32%

Traded near its day low in a softer banking pocket.

ICICI Bank

Rs 1,424.60, down 1.28%

Its size made bank weakness relevant to the basket.

Shriram Finance

Rs 1,087.00, down 1.27%

Was near its day low as all finance constituents declined.

Tata Steel

Rs 184.52, down 1.22%

Led the decline in the two-stock iron and steel group.

Asian Paints

Rs 2,600.30, down 1.17%

Remained close to its intraday low.

Stocks to watch next session

TCS and Wipro merit attention after trading near their respective day highs, while HCLTech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys will indicate whether the IT move retains its group-wide character. ICICI Bank and Shriram Finance are important counterweights after both stayed near their day lows. Tata Steel is also worth tracking following its decline on substantial turnover of Rs 361.66 crore.

Technical market view

The available intraday structure points to strong leadership but limited breadth. TCS and Wipro were near their highs, while HCLTech, Tech Mahindra and Infosys held in the middle portion of their daily ranges after substantial gains. On the weaker side, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Shriram Finance and Tata Steel were all near their daily lows.

Leadership concentration is the central technical feature. All five IT constituents advanced, yet the overall advance-decline ratio stayed below one. A continuation of leadership with improving breadth would be a stronger market structure than an advance driven primarily by a single heavyweight sector.

The bull case

The constructive case rests on the quality and uniformity of IT leadership. Every represented IT stock was higher, the group gained 3.17%, and its largest constituent, TCS, was near the day high. Positive contributions from Larsen & Toubro, Titan, Hindalco and selected healthcare and automobile names added some support beyond technology.

The market-cap-weighted constituent estimate also remained ahead of the equal-weighted estimate. This shows that large companies participating in the advance were sufficiently strong to keep the represented basket positive at midday.

The cautious case

The cautious case is anchored in weak participation. Decliners outnumbered gainers by 31 to 18, finance was uniformly lower, and both represented iron and steel names declined. The modest 0.03% equal-weighted increase suggests that the average constituent was close to flat despite the strength in major IT companies.

Several prominent losers were near their intraday lows, including IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Shriram Finance and Tata Steel. Unless broader groups improve, the market’s positive tone may remain dependent on the durability of IT leadership.

Univest Insights

The main driver of the midday market was the IT rally. TCS supplied the largest individual move among the leading stocks, while HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Infosys and Wipro confirmed that the strength was shared across the represented technology group rather than confined to one company.

That leadership mattered because IT includes several large-cap constituents. The difference between the 0.09% market-cap-weighted move and the 0.03% equal-weighted move shows how this group shaped the aggregate result. It also makes breadth the key companion metric for interpreting the session.

Financials are the principal area to monitor against the IT advance. ICICI Bank, IndusInd Bank and Shriram Finance were among the five largest decliners, and the four-stock finance group was entirely lower.
