the strongest multi-stock leadership, while finance was the clear weak pocket and banks also finished softer overall.

Tata Consultancy Services, Grasim Industries, Hindalco Industries, Hero MotoCorp and Mahindra & Mahindra led gains; Bajaj Finance, Bajaj Finserv, Trent, ICICI Bank and JIO Financial Services led declines.

The next-session watch point is whether strength in IT and autos can broaden while finance and banking shares stabilise after a weak close.

Figures in this Closing Bell wrap are updated as of 7 August 2026 at 3:59:58 PM IST, based on Univest Market View.

Market summary

The market finished almost flat but with a mildly negative undertone: more shares fell than rose, even as several prominent companies delivered strong gains. For a normal retail investor, the session showed a market split between firm buying in selected sectors and sharp selling in financial names rather than a uniform move across the 50-stock basket.

There were 24 advancers, 26 decliners and no unchanged stocks, producing an advance-decline ratio of 0.92. The equal-weighted constituent change was -0.10%, while the market-cap-weighted constituent change was -0.09%. Total volume was 256.84 million shares and estimated turnover stood at Rs. 27,019.62 crore. The represented market capitalisation was Rs. 198.78 lakh crore. The close therefore points to modest selling pressure across the represented universe, with gains in IT, automobiles and selected commodity-linked names helping contain the overall weakness.

Why did the market move?

The day’s price action was defined by visible sector rotation within the 50-stock basket. IT was the strongest broad-based group, rising 1.99% with all five constituents advancing. Tata Consultancy Services rose 3.36%, while HCL Technologies gained 1.62%, Infosys 0.87%, Wipro 0.76% and Tech Mahindra 0.17%. This full-sector participation made technology the clearest source of positive leadership.

Automobile & Ancillaries added 1.06%, with five of six constituents advancing. Hero MotoCorp climbed 3.14% and Mahindra & Mahindra gained 2.82%, supported by gains in Eicher Motors, Tata Motors and Bajaj Auto. Reliance Industries and ONGC also pushed the crude oil group 0.70% higher. Grasim’s 3.20% rise and Hindalco’s 3.17% advance added to the positive side of the session.

The counterweight was concentrated in finance, which declined 4.33% with all four represented stocks in the red. Bajaj Finance fell 5.84%, Bajaj Finserv lost 3.70%, JIO Financial Services declined 2.39% and Shriram Finance slipped 2.28%. Banks fell 0.71% overall as ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and HDFC Bank declined, despite gains in State Bank of India and IndusInd Bank.

Overall, firm leadership from IT and autos limited the market-wide impact of pronounced weakness in finance and softer banking participation.

Market breadth analysis

Breadth was slightly negative rather than deeply weak. The 24-to-26 split and 0.92 advance-decline ratio show that declines had a narrow numerical edge. That matters because headline resilience alone would not capture the uneven participation beneath it: several large gainers coexisted with a larger count of declining shares.

The equal-weighted change of -0.10% was close to the market-cap-weighted change of -0.09%. This small gap suggests that the day’s weakness was not confined solely to smaller constituents or dominated entirely by the largest companies. Instead, the closing picture was broadly balanced in impact, though tilted marginally towards declines. The sharp finance setback was offset in part by gains among heavyweight IT, auto and energy-linked names.

Sector snapshot

IT and automobiles lead the multi-stock groups

IT’s 1.99% rise was the strongest multi-stock performance, with all five constituents higher. TCS was the standout, while HCL Technologies and Infosys added further support. Automobile & Ancillaries followed with a 1.06% gain and five advances out of six. Hero MotoCorp and M&M drove that leadership, while Maruti Suzuki was the sole decliner, down 0.31%.

Crude Oil rose 0.70% as Reliance Industries gained 0.74% and ONGC rose 0.44%. These gains strengthened the positive side of the market alongside the advances in Grasim and Hindalco, though single-constituent categories should be read as stock-specific moves rather than broad sector confirmation.

Finance and retailing lag

Finance was the weakest multi-stock group, down 4.33% with no advancers. Retailing fell 1.52%, led lower by Trent’s 3.54% decline while Eternal slipped 0.40%. Banking was less weak at -0.71%, but four of six constituents declined, leaving the group without consistent leadership. Iron & Steel also softened 0.76% as Tata Steel and JSW Steel both fell.

Top 5 gainers

Stock

Move

Why it matters

TCS

+3.36% to Rs. 2,452.70

Led a 1.99% gain across all five IT constituents and closed near its day high.

Grasim Industries

+3.20% to Rs. 3,323.00

Finished near its day high after trading between Rs. 3,183.00 and Rs. 3,349.60.

Hindalco Industries

+3.17% to Rs. 1,059.60

Closed at its day high, marking strong end-session price positioning.

Hero MotoCorp

+3.14% to Rs. 5,725.00

Was a principal contributor to auto-sector strength, though it ended in the middle of its intraday range.

M&M

+2.82% to Rs. 3,502.00

Closed near its day high and reinforced broad positive participation in autos.

Top 5 losers

Stock

Move

Why it matters

Bajaj Finance

-5.84% to Rs. 1,078.00

Its decline was the largest among the tracked stocks and weighed on the finance group.

Bajaj Finserv

-3.70% to Rs. 2,008.90

Added to the all-round decline across the four-stock finance group.

Trent

-3.54% to Rs. 2,997.00

Closed near its day low and led the weakness in retailing.

ICICI Bank

-2.50% to Rs. 1,421.00

Its fall contributed to the negative bank-sector close and it ended near the day low.

JIO Financial Services

-2.39% to Rs. 256.80

Finished at its day low, extending the pressure within finance.

Stocks to watch next session

TCS, Hindalco and M&M merit attention after closing near their respective day highs, while Grasim also retained strong late-session positioning. Bajaj Finance, Trent and ICICI Bank will be watched for whether their near-low closes persist or improve. JIO Financial Services is another key monitor after ending at its day low. These stocks collectively capture the contrast between the session’s strongest leadership and its most pronounced pressure points.

Technical market view

The available market structure indicates a tightly balanced close rather than decisive directional breadth. An advance-decline ratio below one, together with nearly identical equal-weighted and market-cap-weighted changes, signals modest and broadly distributed weakness. Leadership strength was concentrated in IT, where every tracked constituent rose, and in autos, where five of six gained.

Range positioning sharpened the contrast. Hindalco closed at its day high, while TCS, Grasim and M&M were near their highs. On the weaker side, Bajaj Finance, Trent and ICICI Bank closed near their lows, and JIO Financial Services finished at its day low. Next-session direction will depend on whether this leadership broadens beyond its current concentration.

The bull case

The constructive reading is that meaningful leadership remained available despite the marginally negative close. IT delivered a clean five-out-of-five advance, autos showed broad positive participation, and crude oil stocks were also higher. Strong range positions in TCS, Hindalco, Grasim and M&M indicate that several leading stocks retained buying interest into the close. With the market-cap-weighted decline limited to 0.09%, these leaders helped cushion the broader basket.

The cautious case

The cautious reading centres on financial concentration and soft breadth. Finance fell 4.33% with all four constituents declining, while banks had four decliners out of six. Bajaj Finance’s 5.84% fall was particularly influential within the weak group. The 0.92 advance-decline ratio, negative equal-weighted result and near-low closes in multiple financial and retail names show that participation was not yet sufficiently broad to make the session uniformly constructive.

Univest Insights

The principal market driver at the close was sectoral divergence. IT and automobiles generated the strongest leadership, while finance created the largest drag. This distinction is important because the session was not defined by uniform selling: the market contained clear areas of strength alongside concentrated weakness.

IT offered the most cohesive positive signal, with TCS leading a full set of advances across the group. Autos added a second layer of support through Hero MotoCorp and M&M, while Reliance Industries and ONGC supported crude oil. The constructive side of the market therefore had both breadth within its leading sectors and notable large-company participation.

Financials remain the key balancing factor. The all-decline finance result and weaker banking finish offset the market’s leaders, while the close near intraday lows in Bajaj Finance, Trent, ICICI Bank and JIO Financial Services keeps attention on whether selling pressure carries forward.

For traders and investors, the key signal to watch is…

Track the next market session with Univest Market View and explore Nifty 50 Today for constituent-level moves.

Frequently asked questions

How did Nifty 50 Today perform on 7 August 2026?

The represented 50-stock basket showed a marginally negative close, with an equal-weighted change of -0.10% and a market-cap-weighted constituent change of -0.09%.

What was the market breadth at the close?

There were 24 advancers and 26 decliners, with no unchanged stocks.
