The IDBI Bank share price move came on extraordinary volumes of approximately 20 crore shares on the NSE alone, nearly three times the average daily traded volume. There was no fresh exchange filing or announcement by the bank. According to BusinessToday and Business Standard, the rally is entirely sentiment-driven: a recent flurry of back-to-back OFS (Offer-for-Sale) transactions by the government in listed PSU companies, including the ongoing General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) OFS, has reignited market speculation that IDBI Bank could be next in the government’s Rs 80,000-crore FY27 disinvestment pipeline. IDBI Bank has clarified that it has received no communication from the Government of India on the current status of the divestment process. The stock is up 31% over the past month, reflecting building momentum around the divestment theme, even as the formal strategic stake sale process remains stalled after bids fell below the government’s reserve price in February 2026.

Click Here – Get Free Investment Predictions

Table of Contents

Toggle

IDBI Bank Share Price: Key Data on 17 June 2026

The IDBI Bank Divestment Story: Five Years in the Making

Why the Government OFS Wave Is Triggering IDBI Bank Share Price Rally

What IDBI Bank’s Own Clarification Says

Risks to the IDBI Bank Share Price Rally

<a class="ez-toc-link ez-toc-heading-6" href="https://univest.in/blogs-2/idbi-bank-share-price-surge-divestment-ofs-june-2026/#1_No_Confirmed_Government_Action" title="1. The government first officially flagged its intent to privatise IDBI Bank in 2021. In October 2022, the Government of India and LIC jointly invited Expressions of Interest for the sale of a combined 60.72% stake in the bank, comprising 30.48% from the government and 30.24% from LIC. Post-sale, the government was to retain approximately 15% and LIC approximately 19%.

After multiple years of regulatory processing, including RBI’s “fit and proper” vetting of potential buyers, financial bids were finally submitted in February 2026. Two bidders emerged: Emirates NBD Bank from Dubai and Fairfax Financial Holdings (Fairfax India), the Canada-headquartered conglomerate led by investor Prem Watsa. According to reports, both bids fell below the government’s reserve price, estimated at approximately Rs 66,000 crore for the 60.72% stake. The deal was effectively scrapped, and IDBI Bank share price crashed approximately 15% in mid-March 2026 when the news broke.

IDBI Divestment Timeline

Details

2021

GoI signals intent to privatise IDBI Bank

October 2022

EoI invited; GoI + LIC plan to sell 60.72% combined

2023-2024

RBI “fit and proper” vetting of bidders; multiple delays

December 2025

Government inviting bids; Bloomberg reports advanced talks

February 2026

Financial bids received from Emirates NBD Bank and Fairfax India

March 2026

Bids reportedly fall below reserve price; deal effectively scrapped

March 16, 2026

IDBI Bank share price falls ~15% on scrapped-sale reports

April 2026

GoI reviews strategy; OFS route reportedly under consideration

June 2026 (FY27)

GoI executing multiple PSU OFSes; IDBI speculation reignites

17 June 2026

IDBI Bank share price surges 19% on heavy volumes

Why the Government OFS Wave Is Triggering IDBI Bank Share Price Rally

The government has set an ambitious Rs 80,000-crore disinvestment target for FY27, nearly 135% above the FY26 estimate of Rs 33,837 crore. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman stated in the Union Budget 2026-27 that the government will pursue all Cabinet-approved disinvestment proposals. IDBI Bank remains a Cabinet-approved divestment target.

The trigger for today’s IDBI Bank share price surge is the government’s execution of five consecutive OFS transactions in listed PSU companies, most recently the GIC Re OFS which saw strong subscription. Each government OFS confirms that the disinvestment pipeline is active in FY27 and reinforces speculation that IDBI Bank, the largest single pending divestment, could be addressed through either a fresh strategic sale at a revised price or via the OFS route to reduce government stake and increase public float. The Bank shall promptly disclose to the Stock Exchanges any material information, if and when received.”

This statement is important context for investors: the IDBI Bank share price rally of 19% is not based on any confirmed announcement from the government. It is purely a speculative move driven by secondary market inference from the government’s broader PSU divestment activity.

Risks to the IDBI Bank Share Price Rally

1. No Confirmed Government Action

IDBI Bank share price is moving entirely on speculation. If the government confirms that no IDBI-specific action is imminent, the stock could give back a significant portion of today’s gains rapidly. The March 2026 episode, when IDBI Bank fell 15% on a single day after scrapped-sale reports, illustrates the downside risk when divestment speculation is disappointed.

2. Valuation Gap Between GoI Reserve Price and Market Bids

The first strategic sale attempt failed because bids from Emirates NBD Bank and Fairfax India fell below the government’s reserve price. The Rs 66,000-crore reserve price for a 60.72% stake implies a minimum per-share price that the market has not consistently supported. At Rs 91.90 today, IDBI Bank share price is approximately 22% below its 52-week high of Rs 118.38, meaning the valuation gap that sank the first attempt has not fully closed.

3. OFS Route Dilutes the Privatisation Premium

If the government pivots to a pure OFS route instead of a strategic sale, IDBI Bank does not get a new management team or the operational synergies a strategic buyer like Emirates NBD or Fairfax India might bring. An OFS is a positive for government divestment receipts but a negative for IDBI Bank share price in terms of fundamental re-rating, as it means the bank remains a government-controlled entity without the productivity uplift of private management.

Download the Univest iOS App or Univest Android App to track IDBI Bank share price live and monitor all PSU banking stocks for divestment catalysts.

Conclusion

IDBI Bank share price surged approximately 19% to Rs 91.90 on 17 June 2026, approaching the upper circuit limit of Rs 92.58 on extraordinary volumes of approximately 20 crore shares. No formal announcement has been made by the government or IDBI Bank. The rally is driven by market inference from the government’s active FY27 PSU OFS pipeline and renewed speculation about IDBI Bank divestment. The IDBI Bank divestment saga, which has been ongoing since 2021, saw its most recent setback in March 2026 when bids from Emirates NBD Bank and Fairfax India fell below the government’s reserve price. Investors should approach IDBI Bank share price at these levels with significant caution, as the stock carries extreme event risk in both directions: a formal government announcement would extend the rally, while confirmation of delay could cause a sharp correction.

Disclaimer: Data and figures in this article are sourced from publicly available information.
