TCS Market Cap Slips Out of India's Top 5 as Jio Platforms Lists: Updated Ranking, Reliance Group Overtakes Tata Group and What It Means

The TCS market cap fell to about Rs 8.80 lakh crore on Wednesday, 28 Oct 2026, as the shares traded at Rs 2,430.10 on the NSE at 11:59 AM, down 2.68% from Rs 2,496.90 (my calculation of market cap from the data provider’s share count). Jio Platforms listed 21.36% above its issue price and, at about Rs 12.55 lakh crore, moved into second place, which pushed TCS out of India’s top five most valued companies.

Quick Answer

The TCS market cap slipped out of India’s top five because Jio Platforms listed at Rs 1,358 and now has a market cap of about Rs 12.55 lakh crore, second only to Reliance Industries at about Rs 15.93 lakh crore, while the Nifty IT index fell about 3.5% on AI worries and job-cut news. By my calculation TCS, at about Rs 8.80 lakh crore, is now level with State Bank of India at about Rs 8.83 lakh crore, and both sit behind ICICI Bank at about Rs 9.89 lakh crore. Reliance Group’s combined value of about Rs 29.8 lakh crore has also moved ahead of the Tata Group’s Rs 25.92 lakh crore reported on 16 Oct, though the result depends on how overlaps are counted. This is educational and not a recommendation.

The TCS market cap has dropped out of India’s top five for the first time in decades, according to the report behind the headline, as the Jio Platforms listing reshuffled the ranking. This article shows the updated ranking, how much of the TCS market cap change is the new entrant and how much is TCS’s own fall, what is happening to TCS shares, and what the Reliance Group and Tata Group numbers do and do not mean, using prices as of 11:59 AM IST.

Market caps here are my calculations: the data provider’s market cap at the previous close, scaled to the 11:59 AM price, and Jio’s from 920.9 crore listed shares. Group totals depend on which companies are counted, so I use the 16 Oct Business Today report for the Tata Group figure and note where it is stale. The ranks of TCS and SBI are within about 0.3% of each other, so the TCS market cap and SBI’s can swap places at any minute. It is educational and not advice.

TCS Market Cap and the Updated Ranking of the Most Valuable Companies

TCS market cap: rank and company Market cap (my calculation) NSE price move today
1. Reliance Industries About Rs 15.93 lakh crore Down 1.93%
2. Jio Platforms About Rs 12.55 lakh crore Listed at Rs 1,358; Rs 1,362.50 now, up 21.76% on the issue price
3. Bharti Airtel About Rs 12.14 lakh crore Down 1.69%
4. HDFC Bank About Rs 10.50 lakh crore Up 0.12%
5. ICICI Bank About Rs 9.89 lakh crore Down 0.75%
6. State Bank of India About Rs 8.83 lakh crore Up 1.24%
7. TCS About Rs 8.80 lakh crore Down 2.68%

The headline says TCS was in the top five until today. On my numbers it was fifth, with SBI close behind, and the TCS market cap is now about Rs 24,200 crore lower than at the previous close (my calculation). The headline’s 3.5% fall matches the day low of Rs 2,408.20, which is 3.55% below the previous close (my calculation). At 11:59 AM the fall was 2.68%, so the TCS market cap has recovered a little from the low.

Why the TCS Market Cap Fell Today

TCS market cap: factor Detail Effect
Jio Platforms listing A new entrant valued at about Rs 12.55 lakh crore took second place Pushed TCS down one rank without any change in its business
IT sell-off Nifty IT down about 3.5% in the morning on Microsoft’s workforce cuts and AI concerns, as per Business Standard; Gaurav Sharma of Globe Capital called it a knee-jerk reaction Sector-wide fall
Infosys Down 4.15% at Rs 1,114.75; four analysts downgraded it on a weaker annual sales outlook, as reported Adds to IT weakness
Weak market Sensex down about 1% on crude above USD 115, FII selling and caution before the US Fed decision Large caps fall with the index
Profit booking after a rally TCS closed at Rs 2,075.25 on 8 Oct after its Q2 results and at Rs 2,496.90 on 27 Oct, up about 20.3% (my calculation) Today’s price is still about 17.1% above the 8 Oct close

The rank change and the price fall are different things. Most of the change in the TCS market cap rank comes from Jio’s arrival, while TCS’s own fall of about 2.7% is tied to the IT sector and to a sharp rally in the previous three weeks. The TCS market cap is therefore reacting to both a new competitor in the list and to a rich short-term run.

Reliance Group Versus Tata Group: Who Is Ahead?

TCS market cap: group comparison Components Combined value
Reliance Group (my calculation) Reliance Industries Rs 15.93 lakh crore, Jio Platforms Rs 12.55 lakh crore and Jio Financial Services Rs 1.37 lakh crore About Rs 29.8 lakh crore
Tata Group (Business Today, 16 Oct) 27 listed companies, including TCS at Rs 8.91 lakh crore then, Titan Rs 3.95 lakh crore and Tata Steel Rs 2.20 lakh crore Rs 25.92 lakh crore
Gap on the usual method (my calculation) Reliance Group minus Tata Group; the dates differ About Rs 3.9 lakh crore in Reliance’s favour
Overlap-adjusted Reliance Group (my calculation) Counts only the 33.6% of Jio held outside Reliance, since Reliance Industries already includes its 66.4% stake About Rs 21.5 lakh crore, below the Tata Group figure

On the usual method of adding up listed companies, Reliance Group is ahead, which is what the headline says. That method counts Reliance Industries and Jio Platforms together even though Reliance owns about 66.4% of Jio, so part of the same value appears twice. If that overlap is removed, the total falls below the Tata Group figure, which shows how much the ranking depends on method. The TCS market cap is the biggest single piece of the Tata Group total, so TCS’s fall also trims the Tata Group number. Group rankings and the TCS market cap rank can therefore change within a session.

TCS market cap: Tata Group stock NSE price at 11:59 AM Move today
TCS Rs 2,430.10 Down 2.68%
Titan Rs 4,332.00 Down 0.78%
Tata Steel Rs 168.87 Down 1.49%
Trent Rs 2,858.90 Up 1.36%
Tata Capital Rs 310.45 Up 3.33%
Tata Power Rs 338.05 Down 0.31%
Indian Hotels Rs 811.45 Down 0.17%
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Rs 262.35 Up 0.44%

TCS Market Cap, Valuation and Technical Levels

TCS market cap: metric Reading Note
Market capitalisation About Rs 8.80 lakh crore (my calculation) Data provider shows Rs 9,04,522 crore at the previous close
Price to earnings About 17.0 times (my calculation) Provider shows 17.44 at the previous close; industry about 17.65; earnings per share Rs 143.33
Return on equity 43.37% Provider figure
Debt to equity 0.10 Provider figure
Dividend yield About 4.4% Provider figure at the previous close
RSI (14), daily 75.6 Above 70, which is the overbought zone
20-day EMA Rs 2,336.73 Price is about 4.0% above it (my calculation)
Supertrend (10, 3) Up; support Rs 2,288.32, upper band Rs 2,672.85 Price is about 6.2% above the support (my calculation)

The TCS market cap now reflects Q2 FY27 revenue of Rs 73,188 crore reported on 8 Oct, up 11.2% year on year, with an operating margin of 24%, total contract value of USD 9.6 billion and a headcount of 5,98,056. It declared a second interim dividend of Rs 12 a share with a record date of 14 Oct and a payment date of 30 Oct. Profit is reported as Rs 13,934 crore, up 14.86% year on year, by Business Today and as Rs 13,884 crore, up 0.25% from the previous quarter, by Free Press Journal, so check the filing for the exact figure.

What the TCS Market Cap Ranking Does and Does Not Tell You

The TCS market cap rank changes with every price move, so it says little about the quality of a business. TCS earned about Rs 13,934 crore in its latest quarter against Rs 7,764 crore for Jio Platforms in the June quarter, so TCS earns about 1.8 times as much (my calculation, different quarters), yet Jio is valued about 43% higher. That gap reflects the growth investors expect from telecom and digital services against concern about AI and slower IT demand. The TCS market cap can therefore recover quickly if IT sentiment improves, and Jio’s can fall if its first results disappoint.

Risks Around the TCS Market Cap

  1. IT sector weakness. AI disruption worries and job-cut news can keep pressure on the TCS market cap.
  2. Overbought signal. An RSI of 75.6 after a rise of about 20% in three weeks raises the chance of a pullback.
  3. Rank volatility. SBI is within about 0.3% of the TCS market cap, and Jio’s price can move the whole ranking.
  4. Weak market. Crude above USD 115 and FII selling can pull large caps lower.
  5. Stale or mixed data. Group totals and rankings depend on prices and methods that change through the day.

Conclusion: The TCS Market Cap Rank Has Changed, but the Business Has Not

The TCS market cap of about Rs 8.80 lakh crore has dropped out of the top five most valuable companies in India because Jio Platforms entered at about Rs 12.55 lakh crore and the IT sector fell about 3.5%. Reliance Group is ahead of the Tata Group on the usual method, and behind on an overlap-adjusted one. Check live prices, watch the TCS market cap through the day, read the filings and decide with your own risk profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is TCS out of the top 5 most valuable companies in India?

Ans. By the headline and by my calculation, yes. The TCS market cap was about Rs 8.80 lakh crore at 11:59 AM on 28 Oct 2026, behind Reliance Industries, Jio Platforms, Bharti Airtel, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank and about level with State Bank of India.

Why did the TCS market cap fall today?

Ans. TCS shares were down 2.68% at Rs 2,430.10 as the Nifty IT index fell about 3.5% on AI and job-cut worries, the market weakened on crude above USD 115 and some investors booked profits after a rise of about 20% since 8 Oct. Jio’s listing took the ranking spot.

What is the Jio Platforms market cap?

Ans. At Rs 1,362.50 the Jio Platforms market cap is about Rs 12.55 lakh crore (my calculation using 920.9 crore shares), second to Reliance Industries at about Rs 15.93 lakh crore. Jio listed at Rs 1,358, 21.36% above its issue price.

Did Reliance Group overtake the Tata Group?

Ans. On the usual method of adding listed companies, Reliance Group at about Rs 29.8 lakh crore is ahead of the Tata Group’s Rs 25.92 lakh crore. If the overlap from Reliance’s 66.4% stake in Jio is removed, the total is about Rs 21.5 lakh crore, below the Tata Group.

Ans. Revenue was Rs 73,188 crore, up 11.2% year on year, with an operating margin of 24% and a USD 9.6 billion total contract value. A second interim dividend of Rs 12 was declared. Profit is reported as Rs 13,934 crore by one source and Rs 13,884 crore by another.

Does a lower rank mean TCS is a weaker company?

Ans. No. The TCS market cap rank changes with prices and says nothing about earnings quality. TCS has a return on equity of 43.37% and almost no debt, and the rank change comes mostly from Jio’s arrival. This is educational and not advice.

Is this article investment advice?
