RIL Share Price Gets a Shot in the Arm From the Jio Platforms IPO: Will Mukesh Ambani's Stock Fly More? Buy Now?

The RIL share price traded at Rs 1,222.90 on NSE at 11:20 AM IST on 21 Oct 2026, up 1.74% from Rs 1,202.00, after opening at Rs 1,212 and touching Rs 1,234.30, a gain of about 2.7% (my calculation), within minutes of the open. The Rs 30,213 crore Jio Platforms issue is open until 23 Oct at a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119. The RIL share price is still about 24% below its 52-week high of Rs 1,611.80 (my calculation).

Quick Answer

The RIL share price is rising because Jio Platforms, the telecom and digital arm of Reliance Industries, opened a Rs 30,213 crore fresh issue on 21 Oct 2026 at a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119, which values it at about Rs 10.3 lakh crore. A listing, reported for 28 Oct, would put a market price on Jio, and brokerages such as Motilal Oswal estimate that the parent trades at a holding company discount of 18% to 36%. Motilal Oswal has a sum of the parts target of Rs 1,530 and Religare Broking a target of Rs 1,696, both with Buy ratings from 15 Oct, which is 25% to 39% above today’s price (my calculation). Whether the RIL share price flies further depends on how Jio trades after listing, so buying now is a decision about your own risk and time horizon.

The RIL share price opened with an upside gap at Rs 1,212 and touched Rs 1,234.30 within a few minutes of the opening bell, then eased to about Rs 1,223 by late morning, so part of the first spike has already faded. The move builds on 15 Oct, when the price band was announced and the RIL share price closed at Rs 1,215.00, up 3.4% on the day (my calculation).

This guide covers the live snapshot, the terms of the Jio Platforms issue, day-one subscription, brokerage targets, a sum of the parts illustration, valuation against Bharti Airtel, scenarios and risks. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell the stock or to apply to the issue.

RIL Share Price Today: Live Snapshot

Item Reading on 21 Oct 2026 (11:20 AM IST)
Previous close of the RIL share price Rs 1,202.00
Open and day high of the RIL share price Rs 1,212.00 and Rs 1,234.30
Last traded RIL share price Rs 1,222.90, up 1.74% (NSE)
52-week range of the RIL share price Rs 1,152.20 to Rs 1,611.80
Below the 52-week high About 24% (my calculation)
Above the 52-week low About 6.1% (my calculation)
50-day average of the RIL share price Rs 1,255.81, so the price is about 2.6% below it (my calculation)
14-day RSI 59.2, below the 70 level usually read as overbought
Price to earnings 18.46 against an industry figure of 15.41
Market capitalisation About Rs 16.28 lakh crore

At today’s level the RIL share price is about 4.5% above its 9 Oct close of Rs 1,170.30 (my calculation), yet it remains under its 50-day average. That means the rally so far is a recovery inside a longer downtrend, not a breakout to new highs.

Jio Platforms Issue: Terms Behind the RIL Share Price Move

Item Detail
Issue size Rs 30,213 crore at the upper band, about 27 crore shares
Structure Fresh issue only, with no offer for sale
Price band Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share
Lot size 12 shares, so Rs 13,428 at the upper band
Subscription window 21 Oct to 23 Oct 2026
Use of proceeds Up to Rs 27,500 crore to prepay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, balance for general corporate purposes
Implied valuation About Rs 10.3 lakh crore, or about $108 billion
Anchor round Rs 8,109.8 crore at Rs 1,119, about 7.25 crore shares
Listing 28 Oct 2026 (reported, tentative)

The anchor round included BlackRock, the Government of Singapore and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, along with domestic mutual funds and insurers. At Rs 30,213 crore the offer would be about 8% larger than Hyundai Motor India’s 2024 issue of roughly Rs 27,860 crore, which would make it India’s largest (sources quote Rs 27,859 crore and Rs 27,870 crore for Hyundai). For the RIL share price, the point is that the proceeds repay Jio’s debt, which lowers interest cost inside the group.

Day-One Subscription and What It Says About the RIL Share Price

Category Subscribed at 9:45 AM IST on 21 Oct Shares bid and reserved
Overall 58% 11.48 crore bid against 19.75 crore
Qualified institutional buyers 1.95 times 9.57 crore against 4.90 crore
Non-institutional investors 12% 45.43 lakh against 3.64 crore
Retail 10% 86.79 lakh against 8.50 crore
Employees 26% 12.30 lakh against 46.95 lakh
Reliance Industries shareholders 21% 46.50 lakh against 2.23 crore

Institutions bid early, which is usual, and retail demand takes the full three days to show. The reserved share counts above do not match the 50%, 35% and 15% split quoted by another source, because retail’s 8.50 crore reserved shares are about 43% of the 19.75 crore on offer (my calculation), probably due to employee and shareholder quotas and the anchor portion. Check the red herring prospectus for the exact quotas. Early figures are a snapshot and will change by the close on 23 Oct.

Brokerage Targets and Sum of the Parts for the RIL Share Price

Brokerage Rating and target Upside from Rs 1,207 (15 Oct) Upside from Rs 1,222.90 (my calculation)
Religare Broking Buy, Rs 1,696 About 40.5% About 38.7%
Motilal Oswal Buy, sum of the parts Rs 1,530 About 26.8% About 25.1%

Motilal Oswal estimates an 18% to 36% holding company discount on Reliance’s stake of about 66.4% in Jio, depending on the multiple used for Reliance Retail Ventures. Its estimates assume a smartphone tariff hike of about 15% in December 2026 and EBITDA growth of about 15% a year over FY26 to FY29, and both are expectations and not confirmed outcomes. Targets for the RIL share price are brokerage estimates and not guaranteed returns, and I did not find other brokerage targets dated 21 Oct.

Here is a simple illustration. A 66.4% stake in a business valued at Rs 10.3 lakh crore is worth about Rs 6.84 lakh crore, which is roughly 42% of the RIL market capitalisation of about Rs 16.28 lakh crore (my calculation). That leaves about Rs 9.44 lakh crore for retail, oil to chemicals, new energy and everything else. The stake after the fresh issue will be lower than 66.4%, and the issue price is not the same as where Jio will trade, so this is a way to frame the question and not a valuation.

Risk: Value unlocking needs the market to pay for the stake after listing. If Jio lists at a full price and the RIL share price already reflects it, further gains may need new triggers such as a tariff hike.

Valuation: How Jio Compares With Bharti Airtel

Measure Jio Platforms at Rs 1,119 Bharti Airtel
FY26 price to earnings 33.3 times 40.7 times
Price to book 3.0 times 7.4 times
FY26 EBITDA growth 18.8% 16.4%
PAT margin 20.5% 16.0%

These figures are from Deven Choksey Research, which calls the 18% discount to Airtel a case for subscribing. Swastika Investermart, by contrast, says Jio trades at a 15% to 17% premium to Airtel’s India business, so the answer depends on the yardstick. Jio reported FY26 revenue of about Rs 1.47 lakh crore, up nearly 15%, and net profit of about Rs 30,050 crore, up 15.1%, with 533.3 million customers on 30 Jun 2026. Reliance Industries itself shows a return on equity of 8.94%, debt to equity of 0.44 and a dividend yield of 0.50%, so the telecom arm is the stronger earnings engine behind the RIL share price.

Grey Market Premium and Listing Date for Jio Platforms

Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indicator for the Jio Platforms IPO that is not endorsed by SEBI, NSE, or BSE. Investors looking for indicative GMP data can go through other relevant sources, though such figures should never be the sole basis for an investment decision.

The listing on NSE and BSE is reported for 28 Oct 2026, though it is tentative and depends on the allotment schedule. Use the official subscription data on the exchanges as your guide for demand.

Will the RIL Share Price Fly More? Scenarios to Weigh

Scenario after listing What could follow What it could mean for the RIL share price
Jio lists above the issue price and holds The market accepts a value near or above Rs 10.3 lakh crore Supports the sum of the parts case for the RIL share price, though some of it may be priced in
Jio lists near the issue price Value is confirmed but not raised The RIL share price may rely on tariff hikes and other businesses
Jio lists below the issue price The discount for the parent could widen May weigh on the RIL share price in the short run

These are possibilities and not predictions. A reader asking whether to buy now should weigh the gap to the 52-week high, the holding period and how much of the story the market already knows. A move often runs ahead of the event it follows, and the RIL share price has already risen on the announcement.

Risk: Religare Broking lists dependence on telecom licences and spectrum, reliance on Reliance Jio Infocomm for much of consolidated profit, competition from satellite broadband, tower and fibre concentration and net neutrality changes as key risks. The timing and size of tariff hikes is the main item to monitor.

What to Watch Next for the RIL Share Price

  1. Subscription data for 22 and 23 Oct, especially retail and non-institutional investors
  2. Allotment news and the listing on 28 Oct
  3. Whether Jio trades above or below the Rs 1,119 issue price
  4. Any tariff hike announcement ahead of December 2026
  5. Whether the RIL share price reclaims its 50-day average near Rs 1,256 or slips back toward Rs 1,152

Conclusion

The RIL share price got a lift from the Jio Platforms issue, and two brokerages see 25% to 39% upside on sum of the parts math, but the first gap-up has partly faded and the RIL share price is still about 24% below its high. Read the offer document, track subscription data and see how Jio trades before you decide what to do with the stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the RIL share price rising today?

Ans. The RIL share price opened with an upside gap at Rs 1,212 on 21 Oct and touched Rs 1,234.30 because the Rs 30,213 crore Jio Platforms issue opened for subscription. Investors expect a listing to reveal a market value for Jio, and brokerages argue the parent trades at a holding company discount to the sum of its parts.

What is the RIL share price now?

Ans. It traded at Rs 1,222.90 on NSE at 11:20 AM IST, up 1.74% from Rs 1,202.00. The 52-week range is Rs 1,152.20 to Rs 1,611.80, so the RIL share price is about 24% below its high.

What are the brokerage targets for the RIL share price?

Ans. Religare Broking has a Buy with a target of Rs 1,696 and Motilal Oswal has a Buy with a sum of the parts target of Rs 1,530, both as reported around 15 Oct. These are brokerage estimates that rest on assumptions such as a tariff hike, and they are not guaranteed returns.

What are the Jio Platforms IPO price band, dates and lot size?

Ans. The price band is Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share and the issue is a fresh issue of about 27 crore shares worth Rs 30,213 crore. Bidding runs from 21 Oct to 23 Oct 2026, the lot size is 12 shares, and listing is reported for 28 Oct.

How much was the Jio Platforms IPO subscribed on day one?

Ans. At 9:45 AM IST on 21 Oct the issue was subscribed 58% overall, with qualified institutional buyers at 1.95 times, non-institutional investors at 12% and retail at 10%. These are early figures and they will change before the issue closes on 23 Oct.

What is the grey market premium for Jio Platforms?

Ans.

Will the RIL share price fly more, and should I buy now?

Ans. That depends on how Jio trades after listing, whether tariffs rise and how much of the story is already in the price. The RIL share price is still below its 50-day average and 52-week high, but this article cannot say whether to buy, because your time horizon and risk limit matter more.
