Reliance Industries Share Price Jumps 2.5% as the Jio Platforms IPO Opens Today: Should You Buy RIL Now? GMP, Price Band, More

The Reliance Industries share price traded at Rs 1,221.80 on NSE at 10:04 AM IST on 21 Oct 2026, up 1.7% from Rs 1,202.00, after touching Rs 1,234.30, a gain of about 2.7% (my calculation). Jio Platforms opens its Rs 30,213 crore fresh issue today at a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119, and it closes on 23 Oct. Reports put the rise at 2% to 2.6%, and my live check shows 1.7% at that time.

Quick Answer

The Reliance Industries share price is up because Jio Platforms, its digital and telecom arm, opens a Rs 30,213 crore initial public offering today, 21 Oct 2026, at a price band of Rs 1,065 to Rs 1,119 per share. The issue is entirely fresh, closes on 23 Oct, and the shares are expected to list on 28 Oct, which would make it India’s largest IPO, about 8% above Hyundai Motor India’s Rs 27,858.75 crore in 2024. Investors expect a listing to reveal a market value for Jio, which could help judge whether the Reliance Industries share price is undervalued or fully valued, but the benefit is not automatic. Whether to buy RIL now depends on the valuation Jio achieves, the stake Reliance retains and how the market values the parent afterwards.

The Reliance Industries share price is still about 24% below its 52-week high of Rs 1,611.80 (my calculation), so the rally on IPO day is a small step in a longer fall. The proceeds go mainly to repay borrowings of Reliance Jio Infocomm, the operating subsidiary, and not to the parent.

This guide covers the live snapshot, IPO dates and price band, bid sizes, the value-unlocking argument, Jio’s financials, valuation context and the risks. It is educational and not a recommendation to buy or sell the share or to apply to the issue.

Bid Sizes at the Top of the Price Band

Category Lots and shares Amount at Rs 1,119
Retail minimum 1 lot, 12 shares Rs 13,428
Retail maximum 14 lots, 168 shares Rs 1,87,992
Small NII minimum 15 lots, 180 shares Rs 2,01,420
Big NII minimum 75 lots, 900 shares Rs 10,07,100

Quotas are up to 50% for qualified institutional buyers, at least 35% for non-institutional investors and at least 15% for retail investors. Employee and shareholder quotas were not stated in the source I used, so check the red herring prospectus. A retail application is not guaranteed an allotment, because the issue can be oversubscribed. These bid sizes matter for the Reliance Industries share price only through the signal that demand sends.

Why the Reliance Industries Share Price Reacts: Value Unlocking

Today Jio’s value sits inside the Reliance Industries share price along with retail, oil-to-chemicals and new energy. A listed Jio share would give the market a direct price for the telecom business, and investors could then compare the parent’s market value with the sum of its parts.

The benefit is not automatic. It depends on the price Jio achieves, the stake Reliance keeps and how the market values the parent after listing. Because this is a fresh issue, the money goes to Jio Platforms and Reliance’s holding is diluted, which is my reading and not a number from the offer documents. The stake Reliance retains was not stated in the sources I found.

Risk: If Jio lists at a full valuation, the gain may already be in the Reliance Industries share price. If the issue is priced aggressively and trades weakly, the parent may also feel the effect.

Jio Platforms Financials Behind the Reliance Industries Share Price

Period Revenue (Rs crore) EBITDA (Rs crore) Profit after tax (Rs crore)
FY25 1,28,218 64,170 26,120
FY26 1,46,885 76,255 30,050
Quarter ended Jun 2026 Not reliable in the source 20,865 7,764

FY26 revenue grew about 14.6% and profit about 15% over FY25 (my calculation). The June-quarter revenue shown in one summary, Rs 3,91,729 crore, is larger than the full-year figure and looks like a typo, so I have left it out and suggest checking the prospectus. The company had 524.4 million customers at the end of March 2026, and these figures come from a single secondary source. Strong profit supports the case behind the Reliance Industries share price, but it is not a forecast.

Valuation Check on Jio Platforms

At a value of $108 billion and a rupee rate of about 94.9 per dollar, Jio Platforms would be valued at roughly Rs 10.2 lakh crore, which is about 34 times its FY26 profit of Rs 30,050 crore (my calculation). The dollar value is from reports of the offer documents and the rupee rate is the 21 Oct level, so treat the multiple as an estimate. A high multiple for Jio could also lift expectations already built into the Reliance Industries share price. No brokerage rating or target on the Reliance Industries share price was available in what I found, so I do not quote one.

Grey Market Premium and Listing Date for Jio Platforms

Grey market premium (GMP) is an unofficial, unregulated indicator for the Jio Platforms IPO that is not endorsed by SEBI, NSE, or BSE. Investors looking for indicative GMP data can go through other relevant sources, though such figures should never be the sole basis for an investment decision.

The tentative listing date on NSE and BSE is 28 Oct 2026, three trading days after the issue closes. Use the official subscription data on the exchanges as the guide instead of unofficial prices.

What to Watch Next for the Reliance Industries Share Price

  1. Subscription figures by category on 21, 22 and 23 Oct, especially qualified institutional buyers and non-institutional investors
  2. Allotment news on 26 Oct and listing on 28 Oct
  3. How the market values Jio against the $108 billion implied by the price band
  4. The stake Reliance retains and how the proceeds reduce Reliance Jio Infocomm’s debt
  5. Whether the Reliance Industries share price holds above Rs 1,200 or slips back toward the Rs 1,152 low

Conclusion

The Reliance Industries share price rose on the value unlocking story as the Jio Platforms issue opened, but the real test is the value the market gives Jio after 28 Oct. Read the offer document, watch subscription data and compare the implied valuation before you decide on the Reliance Industries share price or on applying to the issue.
