ICICI Life Shares Fall 34% in 2026, but Religare Sees 42% Upside | Why?

ICICI Life shares fell about 3.4% to about Rs 447 on 13 Oct 2026, close to the 52-week low of Rs 441.80 and about 37% below the 52-week high of Rs 706.80. H1 FY27 VNB rose 22.3% to Rs 1,283 crore and the VNB margin rose to 26.0%. Elara upgraded to Buy with a target of Rs 600, about 34% above Rs 447. I could not find the Religare note, so its 42% upside is unverified.

Quick Answer

ICICI Life shares are down about 34% in 2026 even as the insurer reported higher profit and a better VNB margin for H1 FY27. H1 FY27 value of new business (VNB) rose 22.3% to Rs 1,283 crore and the VNB margin rose to 26.0%, while Q2 net profit rose 25% to Rs 374.22 crore. The share price fell on worries about the product mix, weaker long term persistency and the uncertainty over commission rules, and Elara upgraded the stock to Buy on 13 October with a target of Rs 600. I could not find the Religare note, so its 42% upside is unverified, but my calculation shows that figure would imply a target near Rs 635 from Rs 447.

ICICI Life, formerly ICICI Prudential Life Insurance, is one of the largest private life insurers, and its share price has fallen to the lowest level in a year. The headline asks why a stock that grows profit by 25% is at a 52-week low, and why one brokerage sees a 42% rise.

This guide covers the Q2 and H1 FY27 numbers of ICICI Life, the reasons for the fall, what brokerages say, and the risks. It is not a recommendation to buy or sell.

ICICI Life Q2 and H1 FY27 Results

Metric Q2 FY27 H1 FY27
Net profit Rs 374.22 crore, up 25% YoY; down 3.1% QoQ Rs 760 crore, up 26.5%
Value of new business (VNB) Rs 710 crore, up 20.3% YoY Rs 1,283 crore, up 22.3%
VNB margin 25.4%, up 100 bps 26.0% against 24.7% in FY26
Annualised premium equivalent (APE) Rs 2,800 crore, up 15.6% Rs 4,935 crore, up 15.1%
Net premium income Rs 13,803.9 crore, up 16.6% YoY Total premium Rs 24,505 crore, up 15.3%
Embedded value Not given for the quarter Rs 56,669 crore, up 12.2%

Solvency of ICICI Life was 229.9% on 30 September 2026, assets under management were Rs 3.29 lakh crore and the claim settlement ratio was 99.3%. The 13 month persistency ratio was 84.5%, and it is one of the numbers that ICICI Life investors follow closely. The H1 cost to premium ratio excluding GST and stamp duty was 18.3%, down from 18.6%.

Protection APE grew 39.5% to Rs 1,155 crore and was 23.4% of the mix, while annuity grew 50% and non-linked products fell 4.5%. Retail protection grew 47.2%, and management said it was partly helped by GST reforms.

Risk: ICICI Life Q2 profit fell 3.1% from the June quarter, so the 25% growth is a year on year figure.

Why ICICI Life Shares Fell 34% in 2026

Reason Detail
Product mix Margin gains came from protection and annuity; Elara expects the benefit to fade in H2 FY27
Persistency The 25 month persistency ratio fell to 76.2% from 82.8%, per Elara
Distribution Agency APE grew only 4.1% and fell to 22.8% of APE; bancassurance grew about 4% (sources differ between 3.9% and 4.6%)
Regulation Proposed changes to commissions and distribution economics are still in consultation
Growth gap Embedded value rose 12.2%, slower than VNB growth of 22.3%

The 34% fall in the headline is the figure that Mint reports for 2026, and I could not verify the base price. From the 52-week high of Rs 706.80 to Rs 447.45, the fall is about 37% (my calculation), so the figures are close but not the same measure.

Management said it is too early to estimate the effect of the commission changes, that protection growth of 40% to 50% should moderate but stay above the company average, and that it is comfortable with possible risk based capital and accounting changes. The company has been renamed ICICI Life Insurance Limited from 22 September 2026, and a new MD and CEO, Siddharth Mishra, is due to take over.

Risk: A fall that is led by regulation is harder to judge than one led by results, because the outcome is outside the company’s control.

ICICI Life Brokerage Views and the Religare 42% Call

Brokerage Rating Target price Upside
Elara Securities (13 Oct 2026) Buy, upgraded from Accumulate Rs 600, cut from Rs 625 About 34% from Rs 447
Religare (per the headline) Not found Not found 42% (unverified); about Rs 635 from Rs 447 if measured the same way (my calculation)

Elara says ICICI Life trades at about 0.9 times estimated FY29 embedded value per share after the correction, and it calls the valuation the reason for the upgrade. Its Q2 VNB margin of 25.4% was below its estimate of 26.5%, while APE of Rs 2,800 crore was above its estimate of Rs 2,680 crore.

I searched for the Religare report and found no target price, so I do not state one. One other headline says the stock could rally up to 63%, which shows how wide the range of views is.

Risk: An upside figure depends on the price at the time of the report, so a 42% upside at one price is a smaller number after a rise.

What to Watch Next for ICICI Life

  1. The final regulatory decision on commissions and distribution economics
  2. Persistency ratios at the 13 month and 25 month marks
  3. VNB margin in Q3 FY27, after the mix benefit that Elara expects to fade
  4. Agency and bancassurance growth against protection growth
  5. The Religare report and any other brokerage target changes

Conclusion

ICICI Life reports growing profit and VNB while the share price sits near a 52-week low, because investors worry about mix, persistency and regulation. Elara sees a 34% upside, and the Religare call of 42% is not verified, so read the research note and the regulatory news before acting.
